Circleville is a small, little-known town in central Ohio. It is located on the Scioto River, about 15 miles west of downtown Columbus. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what became Circleville was John Dickey in 1801. He and his family moved to the area from Newark, Delaware. By 1815, there were seventeen settlers living in what would become Circleville. Development of the area began with the construction of a post office by Elijah Howe in 1827-28. A grange hall was built in 1830 and later used as an agricultural warehouse until it burned down in 1865. The first store opened for business on Main Street near where today's shopping district stands (now called "Old Town"). In 1837, Samuel Prentice erected a log cabin on current day State Route 234 east of present day Circleville proper. He named it "Prentice's Camp". In 1850, he laid out a township which would eventually encompass all of what are now eastern parts of Lucas County and portions of Stark County - including much oftoday's Circleville - as well as part of Cass Township (later Columbiana County). The first landowner within this new township was Isaac Myers who donated three hundred acres (approximately 0.8 km²) to form its nucleus; this tract included what is now northeast corner lot number 161st Street between High Street and Old Main Road outside Ulysses S Grant Park adjacent to today's Academy Of Sciences building on that site north side just east off I-670 exit ramp just before milepostmark 134° southbound travelers can enter Middletown Township from US-10/US-29 Business Loop when traveling southwest bound from Columbus over I-670 Tollway into Middletown Township [5]. By 1830, it had reached its current size – with a population of 2,500 people – and continued to grow rapidly until the early 19th century when rapid economic development caused much decay and destruction throughout the town center. In 1837-38, local resident James Fenton built the first commercial building in Circleville; this structure still stands today as one of town's most famous landmarks. Other early businesses included a grocery store (1846), blacksmith shop (1851), livery stable (1857), brewery (1859), insurance company offices (1868-69), cotton gin (1871-72), schoolhouse (1901) – all located within walking distance of one another. After experiencing several decades of steady growth that lasted until World War II%, during which time Circleville lost some key business establishments along with many residents to relocation or military service elsewhere across Greater Cleveland area; however, its unique historical context still remains largely intact today with vibrant retail businesses concentrated along main streets reminiscent of pioneer days while also seeing increased visitation from tourists due to its attractions alone!
Circleville is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 27,836 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Lucas County and one of its three counties. The other two are Clifton and Greenfield. Circleville was founded in 1824 by James Wilkinson as a trading post on the Scioto River between Athens, Ohio, and Perrysburg, Michigan. In 1828, Wilkinson sold his land to Nathan Bedford Forrest for $1,000. Circleville became a town in 1840 when it became part of Lucas County from Delaware Township west of I-70. The first sawmill in Circleville was built by Levi Coffin in 1851 on what is now State Road 463 south of downtown. The mill operated until 1862 when it was destroyed by fire due to an overloading of flour sacks that had been stored there for delivery to neighboring townships. A new sawmill was built on State Road 463 east of town by John Hargrave around 1865–1866; this mill continued operation until 1940 when it burned down due to arson attempts. In 1876,circlevillians founded the now defunct "Cleveland Press" newspaper which published its first issue on November 1, 1876 In 1903, a disastrous tornado struck the town killing 16 people and injuring more than 200 others; it remains one of the worst natural disasters in Ohio history. In 1906–1907, construction began on what would become known as "the Great White Way", an expressway connecting Cleveland with Cincinnati through Circleville and surrounding counties – this project failed to materialize because money struggles kept abound within Lucas County despite pledges from local leaders to finance it . In 1911–1912%, circlevillians established "The Olde Phipps Store" business district located along State Road 463 northeast corner with College Avenue/High Street; this district served as their primary shopping center until 1978 when Interstate 77 bypassed downtown circleville altogether . Between 1951-1972 there were also several hotels & motels located near downtown including: Hardee's Inn (now known as Fairfield Inn & Suites), Embassy Suites (now Residence Inn Columbus), Holiday Inn Express (now Choice Hotels), Radisson Blu Hilton Columbus Airport Resort & Conference Center.– all were closed or converted into residences after being abandoned during those years due to lackadaisical decision making about redevelopment etcetera
