Circleville is a town in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Circleville was John Dyer who arrived in 1811. The town site was selected by a public vote on November 13, 1812, and named for General James Wilkinson, who had been killed in action during the War of 1812. A post office called "Cleveland" was established at Circleville on December 12, 1815, and served until it was discontinued on January 8, 1865. The townsite lay within Scioto Township when it was organized as a township March 14th of that year. On July 1st of 1861 it became part of the newly formed Delaware County by an act of the Legislature passed under President Abraham Lincoln without consulting the people thereof. At its incorporation there were but three buildings in sight; three negroes laboring on government farms were then living near Circleville; one white laborer resided two miles distant and renderd his services thereto gratuitously; all other inhabitants excepting those engaged in agriculture or stockraising lived within radius thereof only: henceforth village growth proceeded slowly until about 1880 when brick industry began to take hold with consequent erection of numerous buildings and development of various trades: schools being erected soon after1882 which has kept up development ever since This progress has been chiefly due to enterprise and enterprise alone-nothing less than taxation having hitherto furnished nearly two-thirds Of all funds requisite for erection not less than $500 per annum has been raised since adoption of said ordinance (from minutes book #1) In 1902 new school building replaced old frame structure which had become decrepit;circa 1920scirca 1930sthe present library building erected
Circleville was founded in 1810 by brothers John and James Circleville. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the intersection of two major highways, Route 111 and the Ohio Canal. By 1830, Circleville had a population of 1,500 citizens. In 1837, the name of the town was changed to Medina after General George Washington's home state.
