Cincinnati was founded by General George Rogers Clark in 1795 as an agricultural town on the Scioto River. Grant became President of the United States and ordered General Robert E. Lee to move his army from Virginia to Chattanooga so that he could attack Union forces under General Joseph Hooker near Vicksburg, Mississippi. General Lee refused to participate in this proposed strategic withdrawal from Tennessee and instead chose to march into central Alabama with his remaining forces to help defend Mobile Bay against Federal invaders led by Andrew Johnson. After years of fighting Wilson's War (1865-1871), Cincinnati emerged as a major center for industry during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. In 1884, businessman Dan Gilbert built what is now One Fifth Street into one of Americas first high-rise buildings when he erected West End Hall as a home for himself and his family. Gilbert later founded various other businesses including The Enquirer (now known as The Cincinnati Enquirer), Bankers Trust Company and First National Life Insurance Company among many others. During World War II much activity took place in Hamilton County outside Cincinnatis borders due to wartime production needs such as aircraft manufacturing at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base east OF Cincinnati; shipbuilding at Paintsville Harbor; chemical warfare production at Butler Arsenal; ice cream manufacturing at Two Rivers Creamery; firearms production at Piqua Arsenal Ammunition Plant; etc.. After 1945 much suburban development occurred with new housing estates being built around airport/motorway projects such as Yellow Springs Airport & I-75 south Of Toledo which included thousands more acres than were once within urban boundaries
