In 1935 Wernher von Braun purchased Nichols & Nichols from J.B. Nichols and renamed it Von Braun Instrument Company Incorporated (VBI). From 1934 to 1945 VBI produced the Ground-Based interceptor project for the United States government which was known as Project Signature Valley. In 1951 VBI became part of Hughes Aircraft Corporation when that company merged with Raytheon Company (then Hughes Aircraft Corporation) During the 1960s and 1970s there were several technological advances within the field of optics including Laser Technology Development Laboratories (LTDL), which developed lasers for use in optoelectronics; holography; digital photography;and image intensifiers/defocusers etcetera During this time many employee jobs such as sales representatives and technical advisors were created within Hughes Electronics Corporation where employees could participate directly in product development In 1982 Hughes sold its interest in Hughes Aircraft Corporation to Marvell Systems Limited who continue to manufacture optic products under their ownership until 1990
