In 1892 the Cincinnati Rifle and Pistol Club designed a new muzzleloader rifle which they christened the .45 Colt. This rifle was chambered for the .45-caliber cartridge and used a round designed by Colonel John M. Browning, who also developed the U.S. Navy's first breechloading rifle in 1857. The gun was so successful that it became known as the "Browning Gun." From 1892 to 1896, Cincinnati had an abundance of rifles being made in their factory which include Colts, Mausers, Winchesters and Stevens Arms firearms. Everytown for Gun Safety (TOS) has compiled a list of notable gun homicides in Cincinnati since 1993 using firearm data from FBI Crime Statistics15. It should be noted that this is not an exhaustive list as there are many other firearms that have been used in murders in Cincinnati over this time period including handguns and shotguns. In fact, everytown for Gun Safety only includes cases where guns were involved in homicide or where there was another significant weapon involved such as knife or edged weapon use.16 The city of Cincinnati saw 318 homicides between 1993 and 2016 according to TOS17; however, only 27% of these homicides were committed with handguns25%. The remaining 73% were committed with rifles or pistols27%. While handguns make up a majority of homicide victims (69%) compared to rifles (26%), this does not mean that all handgun homicides are committed with rifles or pistols; some individuals may choose to commit a rifle homicide instead because it is less risky given how easily Bullets can ricochet off surfaces when fired from close range21/. There is no comprehensive study on why certain types of firearms are more commonly selected to kill people than others but one theory suggests that gunmen who target high- priority targets tend to prefer rifles/pistols over handguns because they offer greater accuracy Furthermore, criminals often possess multiple weapons which makes it easier for them to dispose of bodies22/. Although it may be difficult to determine definitively why one type of firearm predominates over another within specific circumstances, data shows that gunshot wounds occur at disproportionately high rates when Firearms are involved29/. Overall, handgun homicide rates seem relatively stable while rifle homicide ratescontinueto increase significantly in Cincinnati
