The experiment showed that grapeshot could cause severe damage to warships when fired from close range and threw open new possibilities for naval warfare. For many years thereafter, grapeshot was widely used as artillery ammunition because it had low recoil and high explosive power making it very effective against armored ships such as warships and gunboats
