Chillicothe is a town in Ottawa County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton, OH-MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. Chillicothe is located on the Scioto River and has a humid continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. The first settler in what is now Chillicothe was Nicholas French in 1795. By 1810 there were 11 families living here with 248 people total including men and women who worked on farms or as cowboys for wages. In 1815 Nicholas French's son, John Fenton French opened a grocery store at what is now Main Street and Center Avenue which became known as "Fenton's" because it was the only place where goods could be bought without being weighed or measured. In 1836 James Armstrong founded Armstrong Steel Works near present day Park Drive and State Road 419 to produce wrought iron products for local businesses such as churches and schools. After two years of work the company went bankruptcy but Armstrong kept his equipment and moved it to another site near Uniontown when he reopened it in 1840 under new management named Armstrong Iron Works & Coal Mines which continued until 1892 when it merged into Phelps Dodge Corporation (Phelps Dodge) which still operates today under that name.. In 1865 German immigrants began moving into Northwest Ohio from Maryland to escape Civil War military service; they brought their skills of metalworking with them. A small community developed around these workers called "Germantown", after the German village of Germantown near Pittsburgh where many of these newcomers had lived before coming to Ohio. When World War I started in 1914 many Germans left Germantown for military duty; some returned home but most didn't again live in an area controlled by Germany until 1945 during World War II when all Germans were deported from Northeast Ohio except for a few hundred who remained in Chillicothe until its liberation by American forces on September 3rd, 1945 . Heinrich Heine wrote about Chillicothe: "I have never seen anything like this place...the beauty of nature on every side! From river bank to mountain ridge everythingajust looks so fresh." His poem "Homer's Odyssey" begins: Chillicothe Island o'erhanging foggy water Shining over rolling hills white as snow An evergreen forest stands athwart our path

In 1840 it was renamed to Chillicothe again after becoming part of Uniontown Township in Stark County. After that time it continued to grow steadily until 1907 when it lost its status as an incorporated municipality and reverted back to being a unincorporated community. As an unincorporated community, Chillicothe has had little control over its own destiny but has seen significant growth throughout its history both within and outside of its borders. Today, Chillicooth is known for its wide variety of cultural experiences such as music festivals and art events which bring people from all over into town for some unique dining experiences or culture shockings!
Chillicothe was founded in 1796 by Nicholas Biddle. It became a town in 1824 and a city in 1837. In 1907, it merged with the neighboring town of Vandalia to form the larger city of Chillicothe-Vandalia.
