Chillicothe is a small town in Steuben County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The Chillicothe Arsenal Post Office is located in the town. The first settler in what is now Chillicothe was George Washington and his family who arrived there in 1796. Wilhelm Hennepin built a cabin on the banks of the Maumee River near present-day Uniontown in 1814. In 1825, John Green bought land and built a mill on the Scioto River. In 1830, John Fenton erected a log cabin on current-day Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard east of downtown Chillicothe to serve as an inn and tavern called "Fenton's". In 1835, James Moulton laid out a village called Moultonville within present-day Chillicothe limits; it included parts of what are today Lowrie Township and Highrie Township. On October 15, 1836, General Oliver Hazard Perry laid out a new township within Steuben County named Perrysburg after him; it included all of what are now Paintersburg Township and part of what are todayittowns of Grove City. On October 15, 1840, Perrysburg incorporated as the first city in Steuben County with 3square miles (8 km2) territory including Downtown Perrysburg and parts of what are now eastern Hillsboro Township and western North Olmsted Township On July 12, 1850 - two weeks after President Zachary Taylor took office - much of central Ohio became Mexican territory when Mexico ceded Texas to America following its war with Spain On January 26th 1861 - seven days before Ohio seceded from the United States - Illinois reached an agreement with Kentucky that allowed Kentucky to annex most of southern Indiana Territory including present-day Chillicothe On March 14th 1861 - one day after Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor – Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered all troops eastward along the river border into northern Steuben County under cover of darkness On May 25th 1861 – less than three months after Ohio seceded from the United States – American Civil War began with Battle Of Gettysburg Chillicothe experienced some heavy fighting during both World Wars I & II as part as part of various skirmishes between soldiers from both armies

Chillicothe, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and part of the Chillicothe-Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 27,814 at the 2010 census, making it the largest municipality in that area. The name "Chillicothe" is derived from Delaware Creek and Old French chicolotte meaning "a piece of wood." It was platted on December 1, 1812 by General James Wilkinson as Caldwell Township, within Scioto County. The first settler in Chillicothe was John Marshall who arrived on July 4, 1813. He built a cabin on what is now Sully Hill Road. In 1824 German immigrant Gottlieb Sell becamethe first postmaster when he moved to Chillicothe from Licking County. A year later Cincinnati native Solomon Eaton arrived and began operations as a gristmilliner; soon afterwards he erected an adobe house which served as the town's first jail until 1851 when it was replaced by the current courthouse building erected in 1840s. During the American Civil War most residents sided with the Union while others chose to stay Neutral or support emancipation efforts led by abolitionists such as Abraham Lincoln. As a result of this divided loyalties many businesses closed down during wartime including one operated by George Wernham which only reopened after hostilities ended. Although some people did venture out into Confederate territory (eager for supplies) most professionals stayed away until 1865 when all Americans must leave for Illinois under martial law following AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR ENDING IN VICTORY FOR THE CONFEDERATE STATES OverrunOhio Territory). Chillicothe was founded in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. It spread out of its small town roots and became a major regional center for the coalmining and manufacturing industries. The city’s growth led to increased traffic, pollution, and crime. In the 1960s, Chillicothe began to emerge as an important center for the gay liberation movement.
