Chillicothe, Ohio is a city in the United States located on the Scioto River. The population was 27,711 at the 2010 census. Chillicothe is one of several cities in Northwest Ohio that were founded during the early 1800s as part of what is known as the "Great Lakes region." Chillicothe's growth has been due to its location and its relationship with other nearby municipalities. The first recorded reference to Chillicothe occurred in 1795 when it was called Hintonville after John Hinton, an Englishman who had settled there in 1793. In 1815, a group of farmers from Ross Township founded Milton according to a petition they submitted to the government. The first post office in town was established on July 1, 1816. By 1830, most of the people living in town had moved away for economic reasons and only about 10% of the original population remained by 1840. In 1847, Chillicothe became part of Athens County when Athens County was created from parts of Lucas and Chester counties. In 1850, Athens County voted to secede from Ohio and become independent again named “Cincinnati” but never ratified this decision because they did not have enough residents to form a county government. As a result, Chillicothe continued to be part of Athens County until 1871 when it became its own separate municipality under state law. In 1870-1871, Isaac Pittman built an sawmill on High Street just east of what is now chillicohethetteschoolschool District No 3 (Stuyvesant) which quickly became one of town's most important businesses and sources of revenue. In 1836, Captain John Smith founded the first post office in Chillicothe. It wasn't until 1853 that Ohio State Road No. 2 was built through the village which connected it with Urbana on the other side of the Scioto River (now known as Athens). The road led from Chillicothe to Toledo on what is now US-27 south ofUrbana. In 1902, a gas pipeline was completed connecting Chillicothe with Akron via Perrysburg and Mansfield before reaching Columbus; this made chillirotehnicol production possible for Columbus residents who could no longer afford to buy produce from afar. Chillicothe was founded on April 14, 1796 by Anthony Wayne and his brother-in-law, James Wilkinson. It became a town in 1813. The first post office was established in Chillicothe on March 3, 1817.
