Chillicothe, Ohio is a city located in the state of Ohio. It was founded on November 6, 1814 by General David Darlington and became a town on January 15, 1827. The population of Chillicothe peaked at over 120,000 in 1920 and has since declined to around 50,000 today. However, the city’s history is still significant due to its role in the American Revolution and its connection to firearms. The first firearm used in the American Revolution was a musket. The musket had been invented by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and it became popular after being used by the French during their War of Independence. In 1775, Major John Pitcairn bought two muskets from Nicholas-Jacques Conte for £500 each. After the war ended, Pitcairn returned home with his new weapons and began using them in local elections as part of his political satire called “Pitcairn’s Pistol Partisanism”. In 1776, George Washington purchased four handguns from Nicholas-Jacques Conte for $200 each. He then used these handguns to shoot at British troops during the Battle of Monmouth Court House which resulted in a victory for America. Soon after this event, many Americans began using handguns to fight wars abroad as well (e.g.,Revolutionary War). In 1814, General David Darlington founded Chillicothe because he realized that there was no military force available to him in northern Ohio due to lack of cavalrymen or artillerymen (the area was then known as “The Northwest Territory”). By 1800, Chillicothe had become an important trading post thanks to its location on the Great Lakes region between Canada and Illinois/Indiana/Ohio & Michigan.) Because guns were so scarce back then (and also because Native Americans had access toguns), gun dealers would often sell pistols instead of rifles or shotguns which gave them an edge over other traders when it came time for auctions or sales (#gunbuyers vs gunsellers). This led to some heated debates among gun enthusiasts about who should get priority when it came time for auctions or sales (#gunowners vs non-gunowners). Ultimately though, guns quickly replaced horses as one of America’s most common objects #firearms becoming more prevalent than textiles# throughout much of 19th century United States.)

The first handguns were brought to Chillicothe in 1836 by Capt. David Dudley, a U.S. Army officer stationed in the city at the time. The first gun case was made from a plank of wood and shot off a sling, but it was not very effective. In 1839, one of the men who worked on the fortification of Chillicothe came across a piece of cannonball which he had salvaged from an enemy engagement and fashioned into what became known as the Dudleys Gun Case or "Dudley's Pistol." This pistolcase is still present at the fort today and is on display within the visitor center.

In 1920, it became a city when its charter was amended to allow for that classification under duress from residents of Steubenville who wanted their county to remain a rural district separate from Columbus. Chillicothe is home to two universities: The Ohio State University and Delaware Valley Community College–Shannon Campus. There are also several small businesses and churches located throughout the community.
Chillicothe was founded in 1792 by John Cline, a native of Pennsylvania. The town was named for the Chillicothe River, which flow through it. The first settler in Chillicothe was George Washington Lewis. It became a village in 1803 and a city in 1821. In 1865, it merged with Danville to become the consolidated city of Cincinnati.
