According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and is water. The climate in this area is characterized by cool summers and mild to cold winters; according to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Chillicothe has a humid subtropical climate . As of the census of 2000, there were 2,521 people, 817 households, and 594 families residing in the town. The population density was 923 people per square mile (364/km²). There were 853 housing units at an average density of 419 per square mile (158/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 93% White alone, 0% African American alone, 1% Native American alone, 3% Asian alone, 0% Pacific Islander alone and 1% from two or more races

The first volley of shots in the American Revolution were fired from pistols. The Second Continental Congress voted on April 14, 1775, to adopt a resolution calling for the arming of citizens to protect themselves against British invasions. This resolution called for "the arming of all men who can load and carry arms, except those who have agreed to be exempted by law." By 1776, pistols had replaced muskets as the weapon of choice for shooting at gun targets. Riflemen began using rifles in larger numbers in that year as well. Rifle practice allowed soldiers to better aim their weapons and led to increased casualties among them because they could not use their hands to steady the firearm. On December 16, 1776, George Washington personally ordered the firing of four cannons from Mount Vernon into an adjacent group of trees in order to test how effective rifle fire was against targets at a distance. The results were disappointing: only one cannon shot hit its target and caused no damage. However, this demonstration showed that riflefire could indeed be deadly when used effectively against human targets up close.
Chillicothe is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,873 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stark County. Chillicothe was founded in 1811 by General David Hunter and named for the Chilli peppers that grow plentifully there. The first post office was established in Chillicothe on December 12, 1811, and closed on July 1, 1870. In 1830, a Methodist church was erected in what is now the downtown district of Chillicothe; it burned down in 1831. The first store on Main Street opened in 1860 and became one of the largest merchants in town. A cotton gin and mill were built about 1880 to produce cloth for local consumption; they were eventually discontinued and replaced by local banks which continue to operate today as branch offices of First National Bank (FNB). In 1907, FNB merged with NationsBank to form Nationwide Bankshares Corporation (NBC). After being acquired by JBS Holdings Incorporated (JBS) in 2013, NBC ceased operation as an independent company and became part of JBS' holding company Midwest Bankshares LP (). In November 2018 Midwest Bankshares LP announced it would sell all its assets to JP Morgan Chase & Co., effective January 1st 2019. As a result of this saleNBC ceased operations as an independently owned bank within JPMorgan Chase & Co.'sJamie Dimon-led corporate group known as Jamie Dimon LLC ().
Chillingicothe was founded in 1812 as a small community of thirteen settlers by Colonel Nicholas Trimble. The town grew rapidly, and by 1830 it had a population of two hundred. The first store in Chillicothe was built on the corner of Main and State Streets, and the first school was opened in 1827. In 1834, Chillicothe became an incorporated municipality with a population of three hundred. In 1850, Chillicothe became the capital city of Ohio. The mayor at that time was Wm. H Conway. In 1861, the capital moved to Columbus after the Battle of Gettysburg destroyed most of Philadelphia in what is known as "The Great Fire." growth slowed after World War I; however, it resumed during Prohibition which ended in 1933. In 1945, Chillicothe became one of fifteen communities within the newly created Cleveland-Akron metropolitan area when that area was formed from parts of three other cities: Cleveland, Akron and Canton.
