These devices allowed guns to be rotated in a circle to aim at a target from any direction. 1911: The first gun swivels using metal instead of leather or cloth were invented by the brothers Julius and Gustavus Clench in Cincinnati, Ohio. They created the Clench-Swivel Gun Swivel in 1911 as a way to improve accuracy with firearms while also reducing maintenance costs. 1920s-1950s: There was a proliferation of gun swivels during the 1920s and 1930s due to their widespread use in artillery and military applications. Many companies developed different types of swivels for different firearm applications including those made by Heer (now part of Heckler & Koch), Browning, Colt, Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Winchester, Savage Arms, Keltec Arms and SIG Sauer rifles among others.
Chillicothe is a city in Chillicothe County, Ohio, United States. The population was 21,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Chillicothe. The downtown area is home to the Chillicothe Municipal Airport and the largest shopping district in central Ohio. The original village of Chillicothe was platted in 1811 and became a part of Athens Township in 1817. In 1824, it became part of Chillicothe Township again. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Chillicothe were five men from Sussex County, England on a ship called " Pegasus " on October 12, 1799. They named their new settlement after John Quincy Adams' victory as president over George Washington at Yorktown that year (the Battle of Yorktown). Adams had been born near Philadelphia but moved to Massachusetts when he was two years old and never returned to that state again until he won election as president in 1800. Three years later his father died at age 55 while he was still young enough to vote so Adams became governor; his older brother took over as senator fromMassachusetts and served for many years afterwards before dying in office at 84 years old on November 14, 1847 (the date remains an important national holiday). Adams had originally intended to name the town " Quincy ", but upon hearing about John Fenton's successful campaign for mayor of Cincinnati with the same name elsewhere in Ohio he changed his mind and settled on " Chillicote ". The choice may have been made because it sounded more Indian-like than Englishman-sounding names like " Lexington ", " Portsmouth ", or even " Cincinnati ". In fact, one early resident said that anyone who found him living under this name would be sure that he hailed from one of those places mentioned above! Inaugurated as a township on February 3, 1824 by Judge James Gibbs with twenty-one citizens voting thereon – all freeholders – it grew rapidly into a small city by 1830 with its own post office ($1 per week), jail ( renamed State prison after Act 5th Mar 1st 1830), three churches ( Methodist Episcopal soon becoming First Presbyterian) and thirty businesses including fifteen taverns/beer gardens! The city was named for British Prime Minister of India, William Pitt, and it became a U.S. capital in 1851 after the United States gained independence from Great Britain. Cleveland played an important role in the American Civil War as a manufacturing center and served as the capital of Ohio until 1795 when Cincinnati took that role. In 1901, Cleveland joined with other cities to form the Greater Cleveland Area which has since grown into one of North America's most populous regions.
