In January 2009, Mayor Tony Yarborough announced plans for construction of a new downtown library which would be state-of-the-art with more than 22000 square feet (2,500 m²) of exhibit space and 10 auditoriums along with 2 ballrooms and 2 dance studios; it would also include 100 acres (40 ha) of parkland adjacent to riverfront development including a two-acre lake filled with sport fishing tournaments every season. In 1857, the village of Chillicothe incorporated as a city under the name of "Chilicothe". However, this city only lasted for one year before it was merged into Cleveland. Today, Chillicothe remains an important center for education and industry across several sectors including manufacturing (especially within information technology), healthcare services and retail stores. There are also several professional sports teams including the Demon Deacons football team and basketball team which play in Greater Cleveland Sports Arena.
In 1792, Chillicothe was founded as a small town in the Northwest Territory of Ohio. In 1813, it became the capital of the newly admitted state of Ohio. The city's growth continued through the 19th century, and by 1920 it had reached its present size. In 1951, Chillicothe was merged with Toledo to form a new city-state called Toledo-Chillicothe.
