Chillicothe is a town in Morrow County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,697 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Morrow Metropolitan Statistical Area. Chillicothe was founded in 1812 by General David Coffee and his family as a stop on the National Road. The first store in Chillicothe was built by John Cooksey and opened in 1814. In 1870, Chillicothe became the county seat of Morrow County; it remained so until 1912 when Dayton took over that role. The city of Cincinnati annexed parts of Morrow County in 1907 to form Hamilton Township; however, Chillicothe continued to be its own local government until 1914. In 1970, portions of Morrow Township were merged with Adams Township to form Chilicote Township; however, Chilicote reverted to its separate government status after being reincorporated into Morrow County on July 1, 2002. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , all land. As of the census[10] of 2000, there were 3,898 people,[11] 3,446 households,[12] and 1,951 families residing within the township boundaries (excluding unincorporated areas). The population density was 97 people per square mile (35/km²). There were 496 housing units at an average density of 43 per square mile (17/km²). The town quickly became prosperous because it had access to good farmland and natural resources such as timber and coal mines. The town's growth continued until World War II when it lost its status as an agricultural center due to changes in technology and global trade. However, during the postwar years, Chillicothe regained some of its prominence thanks to its role as an educational center hosting schools such as Case Western Reserve University and Kent State University. In 1834, the first school in Chillicothe was built on State Street. The town became an important center for trade and commerce in Ohio. In 1845, the first railroad reached Chillicothe; it helped to increase economic growth and make the town a major cultural attraction. The city of Cincinnati began to grow nearby and competition for jobs forced many businesses out of business in the late 1800s. In 1902, Chillicothe merged with neighboring Findlay to form the current city of Findlay-Chillicothe.
