As Ammunition historians, it is our honor to document the history of ammunition in Chillicothe, Ohio. The city was founded by fur trappers in 1812 and became a center for the production of firearms. Ammunition manufacturers such as Winchester and Remington were headquartered here until the late 1800s. Today, ammunition remains an important part of American life and culture. In Chillicothe, we celebrate the beauty, durability and potential of ammo with events like the annual National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) Annual Meeting or open-air target shooting at University Park. Our museum hosts exhibits on various aspects of ammunition history from muzzleloader rifles to modern reloading techniques.

In addition, each cartridge has different performance characteristics which can affect target acquisition, accuracy and even wounding rates depending on the type of target(s) being shot at and the distance from which they are fired. Chillicothe is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, founded in 1813 and named after General James Wilkinson who fought in the Battle of Fallen Timbers. The population was 21,000 as of the 2010 census. Chillicothe is located on the Scioto River, about 20 miles (32 km) south of Columbus, on the border of Scioto County and Richland County. The first permanent settler in what became Chillicothe was Methodist minister John Wilkinson in 1813. He sold his land to a group of men led by Nicholas Henshaw for $1,000 cash and four horses. In 1819, Wilkinson's son-in-law Peter Cook purchased from Wilkinson some more land which he divided into two lots for $4 each; one lot went to George Stephenson for locomotive construction at Lima and the other went to Amos Kendall for general store operations at Chillicothe. The town site was surveyed by surveyor Nathan Bailey on July 10, 1821, during which time it had a total population of twenty-one people. By 1830, when the first courthouse was built (1830), Chillicothe had an estimated population of fifty-six people living in thirteen small homes or frame buildings clustered around its square central business district (now Downtown). In 1830–31, Daniel Coe began operating a tannery on Main Street that later became known as "Coe's Mills." In 1835–36 David Blanchard opened a gristmill on South High Street that continued operation until 1972; it ground flour until 1920s and also made cheese until 1986. William Henson opened a blacksmith shop on West High Street in 1840; this shop still operates today as Henson’s Forge Shop #2A—the only location open to the public where forging iron ore takes place among other metal work activities In 1850–51 Jno Bledsoe added distilling capabilities to his farmstead tavern called "Bledsoe's House" southeast of town near present day Southeastern University Park campus; this tavern served whiskey from barrel barrels starting around 1850 until Prohibition ended production there in 1933 In 1860–61 Nathaniel Horton erected an early log cabin near downtown dedicated to serve as government office building used by judges, justices and clerks before becoming courthouse Annex No. 2 In 1865–66 Solomon Pemberton erected another early log cabin near downtown dedicated initially as schoolhouse but later transformed into home/office complex with courtroom and jail cells before becoming courthouse Annex No 1 Judge Augustus Kelley constructed his three story brick Federal style commercial building east side street between Main & Delaware Avenues just north of current day First Baptist Church Campus beginning February 15th 1865 soon after consolidation with adjacent court house annexes Nos 2(west) & 3(east) thenceforth known respectively as Kelley Building & Cooke Building while original Court House Annex No 1 remained unoccupied thruout all these changes having been moved from Clinton School lot next door later renamed Gadsden Schoolhouse finally abandoned circa 1916 then enlarged circa 1928 when replaced by presentday First Baptist Church Campus .
