Chillicothe is a town in Jefferson County, Ohio, United States. The population was 8,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus-Muncie-Bloomington metro area. Chillicothe was founded in 1796 by citizens of Delaware Township and named for James Byers, a Revolutionary War general and merchant. The first store in Chillicothe was opened by Wm. Cranch on Main Street in 1800. In 1810, Chillicothe became capital of the Northwest Territory when it was organized from parts of Indiana and Ohio. In 1815, the capital moved to Cincinnati due to political unrest caused by new western land acquisitions. In 1830, Chillicothe became an independent city under charter granted by Presidio Councilman John Fenton (1788–1836). Chillicothe is a small city in central Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. Chillicothe was founded by Roderick McGillivray and his family in 1814 as a small fur trading post on the Scioto River. It became a town in 1836, when it was incorporated as part of Huntington County. In 1892, it became a city and has since grown to be one of the largest cities in central Ohio. The city's history can be traced back to its founding on the Scioto River by Roderick McGillivray and his family in 1814. McGillivray purchased land along the Scioto River for $5 per acre (0.50 pounds per square mile). He built what is now known as McGillivray Hall, which served as both his home and office until 1860. Over time, other businesses joined McGillivray in developing Chillicothe into one of central Ohio's most important cities. These businesses included Wm Hogg Paper Company, Dred Scott Furniture Company, Pabst Brewing Company, J&R Hogg Coal Mines, Cook & Son Livery stable and Mills Supply Store; all of which continued to operate until their closure during World War II. The city experienced some growth during its early years but stagnated after 1850 due to lack of transportation options and an inability to compete with larger towns within Huntington County such as Huntington or Fairfield. However, through initiatives such as downtown redevelopment and support for community-wide programs such as arts programming and park development, Chillicothe began to experience significant growth throughout the mid-20th century despite remaining relatively unknown outside of Central Ohio until after 1990s when it began experiencing significant international attention due to hosting the United States Olympic trials for track & field athletes from 1988-1996 (the first time this had ever been done). Today, Chillicothe continues to grow rapidly with new construction projects ongoing around town including a major mixed-use development called Music City that will include an NHL hockey arena/concert hall/television studio complex; new light rail lines that will connect downtown with multiple neighborhoods; expansions of Chilicothe Municipal Golf Course; renovation/addition of several historic buildings within Downtown;and numerous other various infrastructure projects totaling over $350 million dollars slated for completion over the next 10 years!
Chillicothe was founded in 1781 as a small village on the Scioto River. It grew rapidly, becoming an agricultural and commercial center during the 18th century. In 1811, Chillicothe became an independent city and continued to grow. The city's first Mayor was James Ransom. In 1870, Chillicothe adopted its current name of "Chillicothe, Ohio".
