In 1870, Centerville became an incorporated city with a population of about 350 people. In 1906, Centerville became the county seat for Stark County. In 1912, Centerville was renamed “Dayton” in honor of Ulysses S. Grant who served as President of the United States that year. In 1922, Dayton annexed part of Stark County to form its own city government. In 1927, Dayton annexed another part of Stark County to form its own city government again and renamed it “Centerville” once again in memory of Mayor James Averill Day who had died in 1926. In 1937, Centerville became an unincorporated community once again due to lack of interest in developing it further by residents or businesses alike. Today, Centerville is one of the most vibrant communities in central Ohio with a growing economy and active community engagement programs that support local growth and development initiatives
Centerville is a census-designated place in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,507 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton satellite city. The first settlers in Centerville were James Waddell and his wife Sara (née Schmitt). They built a cabin on the east side of town in 1814. In 1815, they moved to what is now the southeast corner of Centerville Square. James Waddell was killed in a fight with Indians on their land west of Centerville in 1816, but his widow continued to live there until her death in 1851. The first post office was established here on November 3, 1830 by George Capps with the name "Waddellville". In 1836, Samuel Glasson erected a log stockade around his home on Washington Road near where it currently stands. He named it "Centerville Heights" after centennial events that year: American Indian Wars had just ended and Columbus Day had been declared national holiday. Glasson also donated $100 to start the town's first schoolhouse which served students from Beginnings Academy through high school graduation in 1840. A store opened up at Centerville square by Elijah Howe about 1840 and soon became one of the main commercial outlets for residents of nearby Akron and Canton. Mrs Howe (the daughter of Elijah Howe) ran it until her death circa 1865 when it passed into private hands; it reopened as an independently operated general store called The Gilded Cage around 1888 until its closure around 1930s due to changes in market conditions and competition from larger stores within Akron/Canton area In 1850 Nathaniel Sibley built himself a large frame house on present day Old Main Street near where he lived until his death in 1912; this house still stands today as one of oldest homes within Centerville community . After years of being used as an agricultural outbuilding by farmers during prohibition times (1920s), current owner purchased property adjacent to building lot for use as parking lot for their business services; since reopening business as new businesses including restaurant inside building since early 2017

It continued to grow throughout the 19th century with waves of immigrants coming to work in the mills and businesses that sprang up around the town. By 1900, Centerville had a population of over 1,000 people and was considered one of the most prosperous communities in Northwest Ohio. However, during World War I, things changed for Centerville when many of its residents enlisted in the war effort. They did so not because they wanted to be fighting but because they could not find other places to go due to lack of resources or transportation. After the war ended, many Centerville residents decided that it was time for them to move since technological advances had made it easier for them to do so than ever before. They moved away from their vibrant community into larger towns and cities across northwest Ohio but some remain resident there today including Ronny Schmidt who started his business career at Kroc Foods back in 1976
