The name "Centerville" likely came from its location on the river where many farmers drank from during summertime because it was impossible to get water elsewhere. Centerville became an important agricultural center due to its fertile soil and proximity to streams which gave the town plenty of water power for irrigation and other purposes. However, as technology advanced, Centerville lost some of its economic significance as it no longer had access to significant rivers or waterways. Today, most residents live within walking distance of local businesses or enjoy outdoor activities such as fishing or hunting available year-round

Centerville, Ohio is a small town located in Lorain County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Centerville is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Centerville were two families who arrived from Connecticut in 1814. They named their land "Centerville" after the village ofCENTREVILLE, Ohio which they had seen on their trip through that state. In 1825, a post office was established at Centerville and mail began to arrive from Cincinnati and other parts of the country. In 1828, Centerville became a town with a schoolhouse and three stores. A sawmill was built here in 1830 and continued to operate until 1880. On July 5th, 1831, James Wray founded the First National Bank at Centerville with four partners: John Crain ( trustee), Ebenezer Bowen ( president), Isaac Newton ( vice president) and Elijah White ( cashier). The bank did not have any initial success but it persisted until it merged into First National Corporation in 1893. In 1833-1834 George Stephenson built the Erie Canal through Lorain County and Centerville became one of its original towns along its route. The canal brought new business to town as farmers could bring their goods upriver for shipment by boat then walk or take an omnibus ride down to get there. One such business was Mr. & Mrs Dickey's dry goods store which opened in 1835 on Centre Street just east of present day Lake Avenue N/W corner of North Main Street N/W corner of South Main Street N/W side opposite brick building known as Paulding Mansion which stood until 1906 when it was razed due to fire damage caused by Hurricane Andrew). This store also served as the nucleus for what would become today's Centerville Brewery where local brewer Joe Laughlin started brewing beer in 1938(). In 1840-1841 Amos Stowe platted what is now downtown Centerville following his purchase of several lots near center square from James Wray - including lot 4 from Benjamin Fenton - giving rise to what later became called "the blocks". By 1850 there were 11 parcels Tract No 2 within centerville limits including 3 lots 8on Center Square containing 137 acres total; lot 30 on High School Road EAST OF CENTER SQUARE contains 76 acres total; lot 12 on State Road SWITCHING TO HIGH SCHOOL RD.; LOT 9 ON STATE ROAD NEAR CENTER SQUARE containing 94 acres total; Lot 10 ON STATE ROAD NEAR CENTER SQUARE contains 104 acres total all land grants dating back to 1800s inclusive! These tracts formed an early development pattern continuing into very late 19th century during time when most Township Offices were established via Enumeration District Maps drawn by Surveyors only! After being emancipationed slaves owned these parcels again until sale or abandonment during Reconstruction period 1870-1880! Many former slaveowners returned home after freedom while others leased portions back or never used them at all! Census takers did not list these tracts nor do they appear on property maps published thereafter!! Over time many businesses moved out or closed due primarily to competition from larger shops opening up around Cleveland however some such as J H Mohawk’s grocery still thrived into the 21st century! Much like many things hereabouts throughout our history there has been plentyof turnover yet we remain an interesting community both culturally and athletically!!!
