Centerville is a small town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,236 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The first rifles were built in Centerville by General David Dixon in 1824. He used them to protect his farmstead from Indians. In 1836, Colonel James Wilkinson purchased land near Centerville and built a ranch house there. He also developed a fertilizer business here and became one of the largest landowners in the area. In 1861, when Ohio became Confederate Territory after the Ulysses S. Grant victory at Bull Run, Centerville's residents voted to secede from the Union and support Confederate causes. This caused several incidents during which pro-Union citizens tried to stop their neighbors from joining the Confederacy. One such incident took place on November 3rd when two hundredtifers disguised as Confederates came into Centerville and disrupted local commerce while looting supplies brought by Union soldiers stationed nearby. The pro-Union citizens eventually prevailed and alledgedly looted more supplies before leaving town again that night; however no charges were filed due to lack of evidence. This event led to an increased sense of vigilance among residents throughout Stark County as pro-Unionists continued to try and intimidate others into staying loyal to the Union even though they could not do so themselves.Opinion: centervilleshock Eventually, with help fromUlysses S. Grant, Centerville rejoined the Union on May 6th 1865 following authorization by Congress for this purpose. After the war ended, many displaced Confederate veterans returned home including General Dixon who resumed construction on his farmstead where he had originally constructed his rifles in 1824. In 1921–22 a new rifle stock museum was started here which tells about Centerville's history with firearms through exhibits and tours.
