Centerville, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located in Mahoning County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,814. The name of Centerville comes from its location on the west bank of the Scioto River and it was given to the town by John Davenport during his gift to Mahoning County in 1824. The first settler in Centerville was George Wray who arrived with his family in 1796. The town's core grew up around two schools: one for white children and one for blacks; both were operated by local farmers until their closure in 1907 and 1911 respectively. By 1830, Centerville had a population of about 100 people. In 1827, commissioners voted to change the name to “Mahoning (now Clifton)” after General William Henry Harrison’s victory over Native Americans at Fordstown Battlefield near Cincinnati; this decision followed a request from a group including prominent citizens Samuel Morse and Ebenezer Chauncey which had petitioned for the change . In 1881, efforts began to move settlers away from what became known as "the farm country" towards larger settlements east of Mahoning River due to increasing competition from settlers farther west who had developed land around Evansville and Wilkes-Barre . In 1886, when Columbus Township was organized within Mahoning County, Centerville became a part of that township . Centerville experienced rapid growth following World War II when millions of American soldiers came home following Victory Over Japan . Centerville is a village in the Miami-Presbyterian county of Ohio, United States. The population was 1,433 at the 2010 census. The village has been located within the present-day Miami Township since 1800. It is named after George Washington's Mount Vernon plantation in Virginia. Centerville was platted on July 4, 1800 by Nicholas Clements and John Richardson. The first post office in Centerville was established on October 6, 1800. It was closed on December 15, 1802 because of the War of 1812. The first store in Centerville opened on November 11, 1821 and operated for two years until it burned down. Centerville became a town on January 14, 1827 from part of Newtown Township.. On February 9, 1830 John Fenton purchased 2 acres (0.81 km²) of land north of Main Street from Nicholas Clements for $200 to build a log cabin known as Fenton's Fortification House which he used as his home and business offices until his death in 1850s. In 1830 County Court judge Solomon Hulton bought 5 rods (16 feet; 5 meters) northeast of where Fenton's Fortification House now stands from David Jelliffe for $2 per acre (1 hectare). This property would become what is now called "Leadville", east of Centerville off I-71 between Dayton and Athens: today Leadville owes its name to lead mines that once existed hereabouts although no lead ore remains today except prospecting rights around some old workings near Leadville Damico Creek (). Fenton also donated land to be used for public school purposes about one mile northwest of his house site near what is now called Bloomfield Road just west of Interstate 71 exit 221A/222A in what is today centerville center or "Leadville". In this donation plus others over time more than 2400 acres were added making up current day centerville including properties along Center Road running east/west through town limits from Uptown to Bloomfield Roads leading into other townships or other counties prior to being annexed by Miami Township . Centerville adopted its own form of government on November 26, 1860 when Zephaniah Jennings appointed James Hinton as Mayor with three members serving at pleasure instead of having an elected Mayor & Council like most villages then existing within township Also Townships were created with boundaries defined by houses only not extending into adjoining townships
Centerville was platted in 1811 and became a town in 1813. It was named for Caleb Centerville, an early settler. The first post office was established in Centerville in 1816. In 1870, the town had a population of just over 100 people and it ceased to exist as a municipality when it merged with the village of North Centerville in 1907.
