The first postmaster was Nathan Smith. A gristmill built around 1840 served as the town's main economic engine until it burned down in 1881; however, this did not stop its development as a small rural community with few amenities from becoming one of the most popular places to live in central Ohio during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its close proximity to major cities such as Dayton and Cincinnati as well as its excellent educational opportunities available through local academies and schools such as Cuyahoga College (now Xavier University). The city experienced significant growth during the early 20th century, growing from 4,000 to over 30,000 residents by 1920. However, during World War II the city was almost destroyed by fire but was saved by the intervention of local leaders and citizens. After the war, Centerville experienced rapid growth again as a suburb of Akron. In 1960, Centerville lost its charter as a city and became an unincorporated community once again.
