Centerville, Ohio is a small town located in the Northeast Township of Union. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. Centerville has been named for its location on the edge of a rolling hill in an area called "The Ring" and for its deep-water harbor. It began as a village in 1836 and became a town in 1854. In 1860, Centerville constructed its first schoolhouse - now known as Old Central School - followed by two more schools (now known as East High School and West High School) that same year. The next decade saw several notable events take place within Centerville: in 1865, Centerville became home to America's first agricultural fair; in 1870, centervilles first post office opened; in 1876-77, Centerville hosted what is now considered America's largest outdoor bicycle race; and most notably, on November 14th of that year – Halloween –Centervilles inaugural annual gun salute took place which remains an event annually celebrated today by residents & visitors alike! There were reports of slave traders coming through this area but no evidence exists that anything came from these activities other than rumor until 1840 when General David Dixon discovered slaves being bought near present day Elizabethtown Heights! After seeing this he ordered all slaves brought into Fortracklin during his retreat from Canada during Tecumseh's Rebellion! This event started a long running battle between abolitionists & pro slavery forces which would eventually be won by Lincoln via Emancipation Proclamation! After becoming state capital at Youngstown due to population growth following its incorporation as an entire county in 1907 (from parts of Stark & Union Counties), Centerville reverted back to its original name for just two short years before reverting back again to George Washington Village once more! However this time around there wasn't much development taking place as county government moved from Youngstown proper to new buildings located downtown during this time period which explains why there are few remaining traces or reminders of centennial events from those days! One significant milestone occurred on October 25th 1895 when Centerville hosted its first electric light show under directions provided by President Grover Cleveland! This was followed up with another show two weeks later on November 4th 1895!!!!!!!!! This event is still celebrated each year by lighting up Independence Hall Square with fireworks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
