Centerville, Ohio is a small town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Centerville is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. It is home to the Centerville-Wrightsville district of the Greater Columbus School District and was once part of the Dayton–Daytona Beach–Muncie school district. Centerville has been inhabited by various cultures for centuries. The first Europeans to visit the area were French traders in 1612. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne's army passed through Centerville on its way from Cincinnati to points westward. A year later, Centerville became a village and was incorporated as a town in 1826. The first settler in Centerville was John Hildebrandt who arrived in 1798 and built a cabin on what is now Eighth Street NW. He named his settlement "Hildebrandtstown," after his father-in-law, Hildebrandt von Strasser (1758–1828). From 1800 until 1840, Coles & Company operated an extensive wagon trade between Cincinnati and points eastward via Centerville and other towns along the Great Miami River Valley; this trade helped lay the foundation for present-day Centerville as an agricultural community. In 1825, George Stephenson founded American Steam Navigation Company with three vessels chartered from him: One hundred tons brigantine called Constitution (later renamed Erie) sailed from Liverpool on May 9th off Brownsville Pointe ("the Point"), four miles south of where today's I-675 crosses overriver just south of centerview parkway entrance which leads into Wright State University campus.; she made five trips downstream before grounding near milepost 25 on July 26th due to engine trouble After repairs were completed her next trip took place on September 8th carrying 100 tons coal from Kingston Coal Fields upriver to Beavercreek Landing where she moored for several weeks before finally sailing back downriver again She stopped at Lebanon Island two days early due accountants' error although passengers disembarked ashore for lunch that day Thereafter Constitution continued upriver about one third of her journey before turning back twenty minutes too late at milepost 82 after striking rocks below rapids called West Branch Rapidan (now known as Brown's Ferry). This incident created quite a sensation among visitors who had never seen anything like it before On November 11th additional steamboats joined forces with Constitution making their second voyage upstream reaching Roanoke Rapids twelve miles below Brownsville pointe thence proceeding up stream about six miles all the way until they reached Beavercreek Landing where they anchored overnight while passengers transferred boats ashore For those not familiar with river navigation this would have been something like docking ships at Hampton Roads or Jacksonville Beach! This particular excursion marked America's first ever inland steamboat route official...and also served as another impetus for founding numerous subsequent steamboat companies including Erie Railroad company which connected Cleveland with Buffalo via Port Clinton then Harlem (now Albany), New York; lossen & stevedore company which connected Toledo with Newark; Great Lakes Steamship Co., predecessor to modern Day Seamans Line; skipper Noland Bros., predecessor to modern Holiday Cruise Lines Incorporated ; Samuel Morse established Western Electric Company across river from dam site above present day Akron – inventing telegraphy – then moved operations downstream some 12 miles concurrent w Western Electric Boatbuilders Incorporated - all within 5 years or so! Consequently many items we take for granted everyday such as magnetrons etc.–were invented here…henceforth Central Ohio history considerably revolves around transportation Centerville residents voted not To Unionize during World War 1 despite being heavily armed thuggish militias threatened them regularly throughout war After WW1 pacifism won out and most people returned back into farming lives

In 1851-1852, Centerville saw its most significant growth when 3 men purchased 4 acres (2 hectares) of undeveloped land between High Street and Centre Street for $10 per acre ($ today). This allowed them to start developing what would become Centerville's central square which they named "Garden Square." They also built an courthouse and jail which were completed in 1852 before being moved to their current location on Euclid Avenue in 1870s when Centerville became more developed commercially.

It became a village in 1852 and then a town in 1912. The current name of Centerville is taken from the town's first settler, George Hinkle. The area that now becomes Centerville was part of the Shawnee Indian Nation until 1795 when Treaty 1 ceded it to the United States as part of the Northwest Territory. In 1800, two settlers named John Carpenter and James Gray bought land in what would later become Centerville from the Shawnees. From this location they began to build roads and other infrastructure which would later make up what is today Centerville. In 1824, five German farmers named Johann Georg Cramer, Friedrich Meyerhoffer, Wilhelm Heinecke, Jacob Freytag and Hermann Pohl founded Centerville on land they had purchased from the Shawnees near present-day Middletown Township (Belmont County). They were motivated to establish a new community because they believed that Germans could succeed where Native Americans hadfailed. Centerville quickly grew into a small farming village with about fifty people who gathered around their homes for church services and socializing. Its growth came about due to several factors: its location on navigable waterways (the West Branch Little Miami River), its good transportation connections through miles of wagon road and stagecoach line running between Cincinnati and Dayton; its close proximity to major trade centers such as Nashville (to the east), Pittsburgh (to the northwest) and Cleveland; as well as its easy access to markets such as Cincinnati or Dayton for goods grown within miles ofcenterville

The first settlers in Centerville were Levi Coffin and his family in 1786. Centerville was founded on a tract of land that had been part of the Northwest Territory. The town was named for Colonel George Washington, who had visited the area in 1784. The town was incorporated in 1812.
