Centerville’s early years were quite varied; some say that it started out as a simple trading post because there was no land available for farming in that area. In 1814, Centerville became part of what would become Lima County and began to develop into an agricultural center due to its location on the Scioto River. By 1830, Centerville had developed into a small town with over 100 residents. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Centerville sided with Great Britain against America, which led to many local businesses and citizens joining up with British forces instead of loyal United States forces. This action ultimately cost Centerville many civilian lives as British troops burned down many homes and businesses in raids conducted during this time period. After the war ended, many centervillian veterans returned home and began rebuilding their lives; however, some continue to live here today thanks to infrastructure improvements made since then such as improved transportation options and access to jobs outside of Lima County

Centerville, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio. It is located in thecenter of the Ashtabula County seat and has a population of approximately 6,500 people as of 2010. Centerville was founded in 1812 by Nicholas Centerville and his family. The first post office was established in 1815, and Centerville became an incorporated village in 1868. The name "Centerville" was derived from its location on the stream that ran through it. The Centervilles were one of several families who came to America during the early 1800s seeking new opportunities. Many of these families built homes on tracts they had acquired along the Scioto River near what is now downtown Ashtabula Falls, which became known as "The Village." In 1812, Nicholas Centerville started farming land east of what is now centerville and erected a log cabin on his property which served as both home and business until 1830 when he moved to a more permanent location about two miles west on US-24 (now I-70). From this site he began growing corn, wheat, rye, beans and other crops until 1840 when he decided to move back to his original farmstead; this time he built a larger brick structure which still stands today on acres that once grew corn and wheat for him and his family. His son John also established himself as a farmer with large acreage near present day centerville before moving away in 1870 to take up residence at what is now Piqua University Hospital campus across I-70 from downtown Ashtabula Falls. There were numerous other farmers throughout the 19th century who operated their businesses within walking distance or driving distance of Centerville's commercial center including Fenton Bros., Joeseph Cohan & Sonny Keaney's grocery store (later known as Kroger), Gresham Brothers printing shop, Mr.'s Piano Co., Mrs.'s Tailor Shop etcetera….. In 1907 Daniel Dickey opened Dickey's Drug Store at 4 Front Street where he continued selling drugs until 1972 when he retired due to health problems…. By 1910 there were only 10 houses remaining on Nicholas' original farmstead while by 1920 all but three buildings on it had been destroyed by fire or otherwise lost touch with reality….. After years of planning by various groups over many decades various efforts have led to reconstruction efforts begun in earnest following devastating flooding events that struck central Ohio during April 2004…… A $30 million cultural heritage preservation grant was awarded to recreation district #3 LLC alredy beginning late 2006/early 2007 followed by funding for architectural review…. In 2009 renovation efforts began at Christ Episcopal Church located adjacent to Presque Isle Lake after years of neglect…….. Restoration work continuesongoingatCenterville Cemetery since 2005….. Today muchoftheoriginalhistoricinterestincenterville resides atop restored ecclesiastical architecture comprising churches (ecclesiastically oriented) associated with Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church (1896), Zion LutheranChurch(1929), Holy Cross Ukrainian Catholic Parish(1968) etc…………… Located immediately adjacenttocentervville proper are two ballfields used primarilybythelocal high school athletes;one dating back To 1925andoperatesasanacademic Oval configurationwithawidthof120ftx60ftandheightof75ftx25ft;theother dating back To 1926&operatesas an old fashioned softball diamondconfiguredasthestandardbaseBALL configurationwithawidthof100ftx50ftandheightofthesquare 35footpit.(see attached image for enlarged view)
The town of Centerville, Ohio was founded in 1814 by the brothers Amos and Nathan Centerville. The town was named after the center of a small community in New York state which they had both grown up in. The Centervilles were farmers and their home was on the banks of the Scioto River. They first moved to what is now Centerville in 1825, when they opened a store there. In 1830, they bought land at the intersection of State Routes 422 and 438 and erected a house there. The brothers also built a sawmill and gristmill in Centerville. In 1835, they sold their land to John Couch for $1,500.
