Centerville is a small, rural community in Stark County, Ohio. It is part of the Akron-Cleveland metropolitan area. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Centerville was David Denton in 1811. Centerville businesses date back to 1822 when Samuel Price built a store and post office on the current site of the Centerville Elementary School. The town grew rapidly due to its location within easy travel distance of bothAkron and Cleveland, and it saw its first schoolhouse built in 1827. In 1829, Centerville acquired land east of its original square mile for a new village by name of Aurora; however, Aurora did not take off as planned and soon dissolved into Centerville. In 1830, John Gage purchased 5 acres (2 hectares) northwest of present-day Centerville from David Denton for $550 cash. Gage named his property "Gage's Mill". He developed it into a mill town with various industries including gristmills, wagon shops, blacksmiths, carriage makers and others; but it only lasted until 1865 when he pulled up stakes and moved away because of economic difficulties brought about by World War II.[1] After Gage's departure, most industry vanished except for agriculture which continued until the early 21st century as much farmland has been lost due to suburbanization throughout central Stark County[4]. Centerville began as a small, unincorporated community in Van Wert County, Ohio, on the Scioto River. The community was named for John Centerville, an early settler. In 1836, the town became a part of the new Athens Township. On July 1, 1837, Athens Township merged with Van Wert County to form Ross Township. On November 15, 1850, Ross Township lost its charter and became a part of Athens Township again. In 1868-69 much of Ross Township was destroyed by fire; most of the buildings were destroyed except for one schoolhouse which stood until it burned down in 1922. The only remaining building from that time is the old Centerville Methodist Church which still stands today and is used as a museum. In 1903-04 much of Ross Township was included in Athens Borough (later Ashtonsboro). When Ashtonsboro disbanded in 1923 it merged with Mentor Borough to become Mentor City. In 1933-34 much of Mentor City was included in Cleveland and became Cleveland Heights. In 1945-46 much of Cleveland Heights was included in University Heights and became University Parkette
Centerville was founded in 1810 by George Washington and his family. Centerville became a town in 1827, and it became a city in 1898.
