Celina is a small town in the northwestern corner of Ohio. The population was 7,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Celina-Muncie, OH-6th congressional district. The first settler in what is now Celina was Nicholas Haskins in 1784. He and his family built a cabin on the present site of Celina High School. A post office was established here on July 24, 1810, under the name of New Palestine. On January 1, 1824, Covington Township was organized from parts of Middletown Township and New Palestine became its seat. The first postmaster was James Purdy with headquarters in Covington until 1830 when he moved to New Palestine proper. The original schoolhouse (now known as Pioneer Hall) was built in 1827 by Reverend George Rapport and used until 1840 when it became the church building for First Presbyterian Church which remains today as one of Celina's most important landmarks. In 1864, Revolutionsounder Andrew Johnson stopped over at Celina while on his way todefend Cleveland against Confederate General Robert Ewing's forces during the American Civil War; he stayed for three nights and encouraged local farmers to join him in raised crops that year to help feed Union troops fighting near Toledo Battle Ground northeast of town. After Johnson's visit, many residents began calling themselves "Johnsonites." In 1870, James Dickinson opened a store at 4 Main Street which continued operations until it burned down in 1906; Dickinson had been using an old mill complex on Unionville Road as his store front until that point In 1896 David Starr Jordan opened his restaurant called Jordan’s Cafeteria where he served up Hamburgers and fries until 1926 when he closed it due to competition from amusement park promoters who built their own park just outside town limitscalled “Jordan Park” Today part of Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library & Museum
