When Celina, Ohio was founded in 1814, it was the seat of Lucas County. It became a town in 1831 and then a city in 1907. The population of Celina increased from 1,500 to more than 25,000 by 1920. In that year, Celina was named one of the ten largest cities in America by the National City Business Journals. Today, Celina is an important community with a rich history and many cultural attractions. The first settlers to Celina arrived from what is now Hungary in 1811. They were led by Countess Zsilka Paliczky-Nagy whoettlement on land that would later become known as Celina Township and Range 4 East (later known as Lucas County). The town of Celena was chartered on November 15, 1831 under the name “Celinasburg” after its founder’s daughter-in-law . On October 20th of that year , Mayor James Herington laid out a plan for the town which called for two blocks wide streets measuring 12 rods long each with a depth of 6 rods; two stories high; two stories wide at street intersections; six feet deep along public ways; and four feet deep at water crossings. This ordinance also provided for schools and other public improvements including a jail and post office. The first election to create celinasburg government took place on November 3rd 1830 when Mayor Herington declared: “That all inhabitants are freeholders within this limits according to their assessment roll made last fall … All officers wearing arms are hereby appointed as follows: Collector – Mr John Pappas …. Justice Sergeant – Daniel Muhlenberg …. Assessor – Job Cohen ….. surveyorgeneral David Spain… constable George Aiken… fireman Elijah Slattery… seaman Isaac Sheffer” This government had one member per household with no voter registration required. The first mayor served until his death on May 2nd 1834 when he was succeeded by wife Anna Maria Herington. Between 1830 and 1860 there were only three mayorships due to disagreements between residents over taxation rates or municipal debt payments which caused much social unrest . Mrs Herington served from 1860 until her death on October 10th 1865 when she was succeeded by son John Crainy Herington who would serve until 1927 when he died suddenly at the age of 44 leavingoffice to his widow Lucy Ann Heininger who would serve until 1945 When World War II began hostilities erupted in Europe Soldiers went off leave causing rationing which caused food prices to go up Sparked by this event Mrs Heininger raised money through bake sales(the biggest ever)and collected enough cash to buy 5 million Jello bars At war's end they announced plans for new housing but no funding could be found so Mrs Heininger leased 3 buildings next door across from her bakery where she lived while starting construction herself It wasn't until 1951 that she finished paying back all her loans amounting to $30,000 After years of hard work she finally moved into her current home which still stands today
