This called the Stephenson-Locomotive Company’s “Gun Hammer” and it was used on the opening of the Liverpool-Manchester Railway in 1830. Celina, Ohio was founded in 1827 by the Celina settlers. The town of Celina became a county seat in 1859 and later became a city in 1903. Today, Celina is a bedroom community for the metro Toledo area with a population of over 140,000. The first settler to arrive in what is now Celina was Samuel Sawyer who arrived on horseback from Pennsylvania on July 5, 1827. He and his family built the first home on what is now Maple Street. In 1830 John Hersey purchases land near present day Elmwood Avenue and soon began construction on his house which he named “Hershey” after himself and his cousin Isaac Hershey (1796-1868). Other early pioneers in this area included Ebenezer Brown (1793-1860), Nicholas Biddle (1801-1869), Edward Naylor (1802-1873) and John Matson (1800-1865). In 1829 James Fenton purchased 1/3 of an acre of land at the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Maple Street from Ebenezer Brown for $5 per acre. Fenton initially platted this land into lots but did not name it after himself as he desired. In 1830 hevillied to name his new town “Celina” after his sister Celia who had married him while living in Indiana. The Town survey map dated December 12, 1830 shows that 3 lots were sold within 2 weeks of each other for $10 each with lot #1 located just north east of today’s intersection of Elmwood Ave./Mountain Road/Highway 23. This indicates that residents were interestedin settling here as rapidly as possible! The platting process continued until January 10th when all Lots #2-4 were sold having an average price per lot of $15! No Name Platting took place until April 6th when Lot #5 was sold at $25 per acre! This demonstrates the rapid growthof this community during these early years! After purchasing 1/3 acres adjacent to where we stand today on Highways 23 & 84 James Fenton erected a stockade around 1800 square feet surrounding 100 acres measuring approximately 4x8 feet including racial Walls made out OF PLATINUM SILVER ABOVE ALL WALLS UPON THE GARDEN . It took about 4 years before fencing could be put up due to lackof available materials but by October 8th 1840 fence was completed . Entry into town was through high iron gates connected by several chains thru UPRIGHT STAIRS TO GATES ON EAST SIDE OF STOCKADE . Allowed traffic consisted ONLY OF CATTLE AND HORSES WHICH ENTERED INTO TOWN THROUGH HIGH IRONS GATEWAY CONNECTING THE TWO SIDES OF THE ORIGINAL STRIPE . Many pioneers went without shoes or clothing so they could work inside the Stockade !!! There are still some descendants living outside our current city limits who remember those pioneer days well !!!

The first post office was established in Celina in 1816. In 1830, the town became a stop on the old Erie Canal. The biggest attraction to Celina during its early years were its strategic location on the canal and the abundance of timber that could be harvested from nearby hillsides. However, celina's development slowed down after it lost its access to the canal and experienced several economic setbacks. By 1850, however, celina had regained some popularity as a manufacturing center due to its innovative engineering feats such as introducing an ironclad shipbuilding program and creating a water-powered flour mill. Throughout most of the 19th century, celana saw steady growth thanks to increasing population rates and new industrialization opportunities; however, World War I interrupted this process and led to significant instability in the community. After World War I ended, celana experienced rapid growth due to increased immigration; however, this trend stopped followingWorld War II because of increased competition from other towns in central Ohio. Despite these challenges throughout its history, celana has remained an important community with strong ties to both locals and visitors alike.
