In 1865, Union General John McClernand attacked Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell at Perryville on November 12th while Ewell was leading his division southwest from Nashville towards Corinth; McClernand's force numbered about 10,000 men and 50 cannon compared to Ewell's force numbering over 100,000 men and 1 hundred cannons commanded by Confederate General Don Carlos Buell; however despite being outnumbered 3 times with no artillery support (and having only skirmishes against Confederate troops), McClernand succeeded in driving Buell's army almost all the way back to Corinth whereupon he reported his success to Lincoln who approved Operation Crossroads which aimed solely at capturing Mobile Bay so that Sherman could enter Alabama without fighting any battles or risking another war with Confederates After Cedar Rapids being burned by Grant during Battle Of Pea Ridge on April 14th 1865 due to lack of food rations for his troops ( himself leading 5 brigades with 30 guns) Brigadier General Order No 4 dated May 15th 1865 ordered Captain William Whitehead commanding teamsters from Erie Canal Company No 2 under Captain Gliddenwith throughout day burning stores miles east end point river road bridge Majestic Point & Rte 9 thence forward downriver roadhouse property line w/o orders stopped then rear guard unit began march back home
