The first settler in Celina was John Crampton in 1821. The town was laid out by George Washington Carleton in 1827 and named for his daughter Celina. The first post office was established in 1828 and the name of the town changed to Celina after Mrs. Sarah Goode Crampton donated land for a school and church. In 1870, a sawmill and gristmill were built on site of what is now Community College District No. 2; these mills continue to operate today as part of Community College District No. 2 (CCD2). In 1871, the townsite split into two parts when one group built a house on East Main Street while another group erected a barn on South Main Street; both groups remain separate until today as residents of either house/township still call themselves "Celinaites." Celina, Ohio was founded in 1792 by John Celina and his wife, Susannah. The town was named for the wilderness near where it was located. In 1814, Celina became a county seat of Ross County after being organized from parts of Montgomery and Knox counties. The population of Celina grew to over 5,000 by 1880. During the 1920s and 1930s, Celina experienced rapid growth as a result of its location on the trade route between Cleveland and Detroit. This led to its nickname "The Gateway to the Midwest." After World War II, however, Celina lost some of its importance due to changes in the economy. Since then, it has become a small community with a population of around 1,000.
Celina, Ohio was founded in 1836 by Michael Celina and his brother Nicholas. The town was named after the then-new Celina County, Indiana. When the United States acquired Minnesota in 1858, it decided to move the county seat from Indianola to Celina. In 1862, the new Congress approved a bill establishing a Department of Agriculture within the newly created Union government. This led to an increased demand for land in central Minnesota, so on March 4, 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed a bill creating Celina as its own township with a population of fifty-six.
