Canton is a small city in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. Canton is the historical capital of Stark County and the seat of government for Stark County until 1803. It is now a suburb of Cleveland. The town of Canton was founded by Captain John Horseshoe on July 10, 1796 as a post office between Cleveland and Akron. On January 1, 1803, it became the capital of Stark County after its incorporation as a township by an act of the General Assembly. In 1830, Ohio passed an Act to Suppress Unlawful Quotations from Newspapers which prohibited any printing except in towns with five thousand inhabitants or more and in one case only for three days each week; this ordinance caused many printers to move to other parts of Ohio or Illinois. In 1835-36 the printer Elisha Stevens moved his press from Painesville to Canton because he could not get permission from the state legislature to print any newspapers outside Franklin Township without prior written consent from all interested parties (this act has been called "The Stevens Decision"). The first issue of The Banner (Canton's new newspaper) appeared on October 5, 1835. In 1840-41 Charles Biddle built a gristmill and sawmill on what is now Parkersburg Road in Canton which became one of the largest employers in town with over 100 employees when it opened. Mr. Biddle also donated land for use as other public improvements such as schools and churches that remain part of Canton today including Hardin Methodist Episcopal Church (1857), Stokes Methodist Episcopal Church (1860), First Presbyterian Church (1885), and Wright Chapel (1960). Also located in Canton were two cotton ginneries operated by Daniel Gee and David Brown beginning production around 1830/31; these mills continue operation today as Gee Cotton Ginnery Museum & Mill Complex & Brown Cotton Ginnery Museum respectively.) In addition to these large employers there were several small businesses that sprang up during this time including: Ackerly's grocery store(1840s-50s), Fenton's bakery(early 1850s), Pritchard's barber shop(mid 1800s - early 1900s) and Zimmermann’s grocery store(circa 1870s). However most businesses failed during this time due mainly to lack of competition or maybe even bad luck for those who started them such as: Gee Cotton Ginnery Museum & Mill Complex & Brown Cotton Ginnery Museum didn't survive into modern times because they were destroyed by fire or closed down by competition

In 1870, it became an incorporated village with a population of 1,600. The Village Hall was built in 1911 and is used today as the headquarters for the township library system. In 1919, during World War I, Canton joined forces with other townships to become one block group known as "The Defense ring" which organized various aspects of national defense including manufacturing supplies for munitions plants across America (the first such organization). After the war ended, Canton reverted back to its separate identity until 1959 when it again merged into Township #5 within Township #1 form what is now known as "Clermont Township". Since independence from Township #1 on July 1st 1959 there have been many changes that have taken place within our community including; residents electing their own township leaders through an election process; establishment of school districts; annexation/incorporation into neighboring townships; service mark adjustments for businesses etc...
