Canton is one of the oldest towns in Ohio and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over three hundred years. In 1802, it became part of the Northwest Territory along with Ottawa and Wyandotte counties. The area now comprising Canton was first settled by Shawnee Indians in 1796 and was called "Wyandotte", after Wyandotte County, Indiana. The town's name honors James Krieger, an early settler who donated land to make Canton a town. Canton became part of central Ohio during the late 1800s as an agricultural center due to its rich soils, good water supplies, and proximity to other nearby settlements such as Lima and Dayton. It experienced rapid growth in the early 1900s when railroads arrived in central Ohio; businesses came from all over to trade with Canton’s growing industry. By 1920, many people had moved into the city proper and beyond; downtown had become a vibrant commercial district filled with theaters, restaurants, hotels, casinos – all connected by walking or streetcar lines to various districts inland or eastward on First Street near Lake Erie. In recent decades there has been a resurgence in development around downtown including new housing projects (such as Lakeshore), retail outlets (including several Dunkin' Donuts franchises), new public schools (including Cleveland State University), plus additional business uses such as office buildings and two-story hotels catering primarily to conventions or tourist interests

The population was 11,591 at the 2010 census, making it one of the most populous cities in Greater Cleveland metropolitan area. It is also the county seat for Stark County. Canton has been a town since 1821 and was named after George Washington's former home in Virginia Colony (now Fairfax, Virginia). Canton was platted on May 15, 1821 by James Kieft and others as part of the Miami Purchase from Spain. It became a village on July 6, 1830 due to its location along what is now State Route 611. The first post office opened in Canton on November 3, 1830. The current post office building was built in 1913 and replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire in 1909. On February 13, 1795 General Wayne arrived at Canton with 2 battalions of militia under his command to suppress an uprising against British rule by local Indians led by Chief Muskingum and other chiefdoms around present-day Akron and Canton Lakes Ford Reservoirs near present-day University Heights shopping center and Pershing Square off I-680 northbound exit ramp south of downtown Akron
In 1802, the Canton Post Office was moved from its original location on the west side of town to what is now the east side. The first post office in present-day Canton was established in 1796. The United States Postal Service operated the Canton Post Office from 1802 until it closed in 1944.
