Canton, Ohio is a village in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,929 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village is located on the southern shore of Lake Erie and is bordered by the towns of Geauga Heights to the north, Painesville to the east, South Euclid to the south, and Coventry Township to the west. Canton is home to two major manufacturing plants--Auromere Technologies Inc.'s headquarters and GE Healthcare's Power Plant 1--as well as several smaller companies. The first settler in what is now Canton was Nicholas Hutton in 1814. He built a cabin on a bluff overlooking where he now lives. In 1825 John Paulding established a gristmill on High Street near present day Old Fort Harrison Park in what would later become Canton. By 1830 there were six businesses operating in town: four stores, one millinery shop and one blacksmith shop. The first school was organized in 1830 with nine students; it became an academy in 1836 when it merged with High School of Science & Art (now Lock Haven University) to form High School of Technology & Arts (then Lock Haven Institute). In 1840–41 George Smeaton laid out three square miles (10 km2) around what would become Canton which extended into Geauga Heights until that township was annexed by Canton in 1868 After annexation two years later many residents decided they wanted their own post office so they formed an unofficial post office called "Canton" which opened on July 20th, 1870 from land donated by Samuel Sherer who also founded Centerville Memorial Hospital thirteen years earlier. That same year also saw construction begin on what would become today’s Harry Smerdon Plaza off Main Street which still stands today as one of town’s most popular attractions In 1865 David Laughlin began building a water tower just south of his store at intersection of Market and Washington Streets which became known as “Laughlin’s Tower” after him . A year later Laughlin founded the Village Trust Company which developed into today's First National Bank . In 1903 work began on laying out area that would eventually be called North Canton specifically for development within that community . This included creating streetscape features such as wide public sidewalks flanked by single story buildings with elaborate brackets supporting cornices and gables whileAlso forming blocks bounded by rectangular land areas bisected by diagonal streets making for uniform appearance
