Canton, Ohio is a city located in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Ohio and is the county seat of Stark County. The population was 21,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Canton was founded in 1811 by squatters from Muskingum County in northeastern Ohio who were displaced by a surveying party led by Colonel George Washington during the routing of Native American settlements in what is now central Ohio. The first settler’s home stood on land that now forms the south side of Main Street, across from current day State Fairgrounds; it became known as “The Goodmans” after John Goodman, one of its early settlers and an early business partner with James Dickey and others in developing what would become Canton. In 1824, David Brown purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) east of Main Street for $5 per acre (2 ha). He named his new community “Brownstown” after himself and developed it into one of eastern Ohio’s most significant towns because he was able to bring over a large number of European immigrants to fill key jobs in his new town – including many farmers who established prosperous businesses around Railroad Avenue today. By 1870, Brownstown had a population exceeding 3,000 people and had formed a separate government under the direction of an assemblyman called John Atherton which included: streetscapes (named for prominent citizens), public buildings such as schools and churches,and some 20 stores which served as local node for goods brought overland from other states via horseback or wagon trains each winter months when transportation was available on accountof construction projects ongoing along I-70 just north of town limits

However, recent growth has seen some new businesses established and resurgent manufacturing activities have returned to Canton. In recent years there has been increasing concern about possible gentrification of older neighborhoods – which could lead to potential displacement or loss of cultural heritage within these areas
