Canton, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 7,524 at the 2010 census, making it the largest village in Cuyahoga County. Canton is located on the southern border of Cleveland and is east of Akron. The first settlers in what would become Canton were farmers who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1814. By 1825, they had built a sawmill and gristmill on the Scioto River. In 1829, they erected a cotton gin on the south side of the river to produce cloth for local markets. They also founded a school in 1832 and a churches in 1840–43. The community grew rapidly after railroad construction began through neighboring Mentor Township in1849 and westward into Cuyahoga County that same year reached Canton by way of Massillon Junction railway station (now part of I-675). In 1870, residents voted to incorporate as a village under the name "Canton." On July 15, 1889, voters passed an ordinance amending charter provisions to allow for Village Council members to be elected instead of appointed by Mayor with staggered terms (the first such election being held November 8 that year). The new village government was modeled after one existing in Mentor Township with similar powers and duties including fire prevention; zoning; Strawberry fair; assessment; finance; street cleaning; trash pickup; public works projects (such as road widening or paving); police protection; ambulance service;; elections both at large and within Village Council chambers In 1915-16 when city limits expanded westward past boundaries created by statehood referendum two years earlier – annexing much of northeastern portion now known as Shaker Heights – Canton's eastern boundary became its western limit just beyond which growth had stopped altogether so residents could continue living within city limits while still claiming their residency within Village Hall Limits

In 1830, John Lennon was born in Canton and eventually grew up here too; he played drums for The Beatles before they moved to Liverpool in 1961. In 1851, two years after unification of Ohio andIndiana under US Constitution No., Canton became one of fourteen townships within newly created Trumbull County when it was made up of parts of five other counties which had formed during the American Civil War: Ross township (to its north), Union township (to its east), Clinton township (to its south), Montgomery township (to its west) and Delaware township (to its northwest). The town core around what is now Main Street/Trumbull Road developed slowly over time as residents clusters relocated elsewhere for various reasons such as access to education or employment opportunities near larger cities like Cleveland or Akron but also because area farmland could be barren without irrigation systems available from Lake Erie or hilly terrain for farming purposes only possible through natural processes such as rainwater runoff into Lakes Superior/ Huron or groundwater recharge from underground sources like shale formation). The opening days of business for many local businesses were April 15th 1850 when Grange Lodge #2 opened their doors following a special invitation from Mayor Ebenezer Walton who told them "The day will come when we must meet together as one people." This event marked beginning of a long history where trade organizations helped shape many aspects not just life but also growth patterns throughout central Stark County until disbanding circa 1962 when most rural areas lost their services due largely thereto inevitable increase in highway travel times (>10 minutes away via Interstate 495 BTW now!) which caused economical decline among some businesses owners unable either relocate closer enough to take advantage available jobs or reduce hours demanded thereby eliminating most opportunity for economic development outside latter 3 Southwestern suburbs along I-495 beltway – including much today's concentrated downtown business district – while more than 1/3 rural residents still struggle daily commuting distance > 50 miles (~80 km) & occasional 2nd job ≥ 40 hours per week necessary’!
Canton was founded in 1792 by Joshua Canton and other settlers. The town grew quickly, and in 1801 it became the capital of Ohio. In 1825, the capital moved to Columbus. In 1881, the city was renamed Cleveland after President James K. Polk.
