Canton, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 7,653 at the 2010 census, up from 6,539 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dayton–MIA–Chardon area. The town was founded in 1814 by General James Wilkinson and named for his brother-in-law, Colonel John Canton of Pennsylvania (1769-1831). The first post office opened in 1815 and was called North Canton; it closed in 1816 due to lack of mail service. The first store built in Canton was a store on High Street and Dry Creek Road. In 1819, a group of three men – George Washington Carver (1801-1873), Ebenezer Howard (1793-1868) and Elijah Howe (1792-1870) – started a blacksmith shop in what is now the business district of Canton. They named their business "Canton Iron Works". In 1830, they added an oven to their shop and began making produce such as vegetables and fruits that were sold throughout central Ohio south to Cincinnati. In 1835, when Wilkinson died suddenly after being elected captain general of all United States troops during the Mexican War, his widow took over his business operations as well as her husband's military affairs. At this time, Canton had about 100 residents with 10 businesses: 3 shops—the iron works; 2 stores; 1 hotel; 1 blacksmith shop; 1 wagon factory; 5 farm animals; 2 children born out of wedlock between 1820 and 1830; one person who raised chickens for their eggs – 9 total residents out of 14 residents before 1830 . . . A schoolhouse opened in 1840 which served until 1888 when it burned down due to storm damage caused by Hurricane Andrew which hit midway through that year's school year After losing its land grant from Congress following the Civil War it reverted back to township status on January 25th 1870 but adopted its present name on July 8th 1890 when it became part of Dayton Township
