During World War II many residents participated in producing munitions plants within town limits; however most production ceased when closures began following World War II due to competition from abroad and technological advances. According to the 2000 US Census there were 3,914 people living within city limits but no villages or incorporated areas; this number decreasedly increased until 2007 when all villages became incorporated forming a single municipality with a population greater than 7500 residents (2/3age over 21 years old). With rapid growth came social unrest during the late 19th century; Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company executive James Mapes attempted unsuccessfully to have his company built along Main Street near SI headquarters in 1892-93; violence erupted over control of local commercial streets by groups of white merchants and workers led by David Sperry; two members of SI's board were indicted on charges including conspiracy to commit bribery; and several prominent citizens seceded from SI over concerns about racial bias within their organization. By 1898 tensions had calmed down enough that SI reopened with equal representation for all races under director John Harkness; soon afterwards however Seneca Institute closed completely due to financial troubles brought on bySinatra brothers purchase of majority interest In 1903–04 Samuel Beckwith donated land south of Main Street for use as a public park named after himself – Beckwith Park – which remains today as one component of Downtown Canton’s core district . In 1907 an electric streetcar line called The Great Lakes Extension was completed from Cleveland proper to Akron via Canandaigua Heights/Canton Mills In 1933–34 during World War II munitions plants were constructed within or adjacent to town limits for government purposes such as armament production During most recent decades heavy industry has declined while job losses have resulted among servicessector companies ; nevertheless jobs continue available throughout much recently annexed Oberlin Township neighboring townships rich industrial history including coal mining , chemical manufacturing , printing pressmaking etc Today many people are involved with arts and culture although some families remain employed in heavy industry
