In 1851, boatbuilding became an important industry in Canton because it allowed reloading projectiles without going through customs inspection. This led to the creation of two gunmakers – J h Bulteel & Sons and John Neely & Bros – which would continue to produce munitions until World War II. During World War I, munitions production was limited due to wartime restrictions on importation from Europe. However, during World War II, Canton saw its biggest increase in munitions manufacturing with the war effort being centered around aluminum munitions production at Phelps Dodge Company. After WWII ended, ammunition production dwindled down until it was resurrected by another company starting up again just outside town called Brownells Armory after they bought all assets from Phelps Dodge Company back in 1977- 1978

Canton is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. Canton is located on the Scioto River and is bordered by Findlay to the east, Athens to the north, and Lebanon Township to the west. The first Europeans to visit what is now Canton were French traders in 1795 who named it "Canton." The name likely comes from an Iroquois word meaning "place for selling goods." In 1814, Ohio settlers renamed it after George Washington's Mount Vernon estate in Virginia. In 1821, a post office called "Canton" was established within present-day Athens Township; it remained open until 1840. In that year, however, Ohio statehood was granted to Ohio and Canton became its capital. The first U.S. senators appointed were John Covington (D) and Samuel Adams (I). The town site was surveyed in 1824 by Captain Isaac Backus under instructions from General Andrew Jackson as part of his Indian Removal Act of 1830. By this time, most of what is now Canton had been acquired by nearby Athens Township and other municipalities during the previous decade-long struggle over land ownership between Native Americans and English colonists following American independence from Great Britain. A main artery through which early residents traveled was State Route 6 which ran through downtown Athens before branching into several smaller routes leading out into surrounding townships or counties including: Muskingum County to the south; Hamilton County to the northwest; Delaware County across river to form Cincinnati; Holmes County towards Youngstown; Warren County towards Dayton; Tuscarawas County towards Akron

Canton is located on the southern bank of the Great Miami River, just east of Dayton and west of Columbus. The first permanent European settlers arrived in what is now Canton in 1793, when Lieutenant Colonel John Crampton's party traveled upriver from Fort Loudoun to explore a new land grant they had been given by President George Washington. The first town founded in what is now Canton was called "Munster" because its founders were from that community in England. In 1814, following Indian removal policy under President James K. Polk, all Native Americans within one thousand miles of Toledo were forced to leave their lands and live among other white people until their nations were rebuilt or absorbed into Indian Territory. In 1815, Governor Edward Donoho established an agricultural colony on behalf of Ohio University at Athens with 5 acres (2 ha) purchased from Nicholas College northwest of downtown Athens for $1 per acre (0.8 ha). The college moved to Athens in 1830 and became Amherst College after purchasing adjoining property from Nicholas College for $5 per acre (2 ha). In 1831–32, iron ore was discovered near present day Pickerington and two years later a smelter was built on the banks of the river by local miners to produce rails for Cleveland Railways Company locomotives. After several failed attempts to get a site for a rail line through Canton proper (), engineers decided to build it across the river into Pickerington Heights where traffic would be diverted onto rolling stock brought overland from Dayton via Perrysburg Junction (). It wasn't until 1847 that trackage finally reached Canton proper when Norfolk & Western Railway constructed its main line between Cincinnati and Cleveland using horse-drawn cars pulled by wagons across sandbars at Muskingum River crossings (). Canton was founded in 1795 by the Potawatomi Indians and named for General Anthony Wayne, who had been killed in a skirmish near the village. The area now includes much of Northwest Ohio and is home to numerous Native American tribes. In 1813, the United States purchased the land from the Indians and renamed it Canton Township. The township was organized as a precinct in 1818, and as an incorporated town on March 24, 1821. The first mayor was John Mathers.
