Canton is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 38,391 at the 2010 census and was estimated to be 50,710 in 2019. It is the county seat for Stark County and part of the Dayton–Muncie metropolitan area. Canton is located on the Delaware River near its confluence with the Maumee River. The first human inhabitants of what is now Canton were Paleo-Indians, who lived in areas that are now central and southern Stark County before moving westward over time into present-day Lucas County and beyond to establish villages along the Scioto River. The first European settler in what is now Canton was Job Trumbull, who arrived in 1792 as part of a group of settlers led by George Washington during his third term as President of the United States. In 1801, after land grants from James Kapp and others had been confirmed by Congress, Trumbull founded a town called Ballston on high ground south of where he later built his home today known as Trumbull Hall. In 1812, following victory in an early attempt by American General Anthony Wayne during the War of 1812 against Native American forces occupying northeast Ohio, residents greeted him with open arms when he arrived seeking revenge for Indian attacks that had occurred two years earlier. As part of this effort, Wayne destroyed or captured most of several major villages within miles of modern Canton including Wyandotte (now Elkhart), Miami (now Metropole), Weequahic (now Conneaut), Wyoming (now Youngstown) and Chippewa (now Xenia). The Battle of Fallen Timbers also took place within three miles (5 km) southwest of modern Canton on October 15–16, 1812; although contemporary reports suggest few Americans were present at Fallen Timbers given their distance from village sites,[3] it remains one among many famous clashes between American troops and Native Americans that helped solidify Ulysses S Grant's reputation as a general leading America's successful war against Mexico during its final stage.[4] After struggling through various periods due to lack of government support which included numerous natural disasters such as floods and fire outbreaks which struck frequently in those days – primarily because no means existed then or currently to monitor or prevent such events – Canton emerged as one notable community success story following ratification by voters thereof Of Enabling Act No. 319 passed December 3rd 1830 authorizing township formers “to erect all necessary buildings for public worship” providing also “that no person … SHALL BE CHARGED WITH RESPECT TO THE Worship OF GOD IN ANY WAY WHATSOEVER FROM SHOULDER TO HEARTH”; this act represented one large step forward for both township formers AND Residents alike culminating with establishment OF FIRST Church building officed BY Reverend John Gwynneths SETTING UP HIS HOME HEREON AUGUST 2ND 1830 WITH FREE WILL AND ACCEPTANCE BY ALL PARTIES PRESENT IN THAT ACTION…. By 1840 however much progress had been made elsewhere within Township INCLUDINGestablishment OF SCHOOL DISTRICT & GOVERNMENT HOUSE THEREON SIMILARLY SETTLED DOWN… After 16 YEARS OF STRUGGLING & SUFFERINGS IT WAS FINALLY ESTABLISHED TODAY AS CANTON CATHOLIC CHURCH….During THIS TIME NO PERSON WAS CHARGED WITH RESPECT TO THE Worship OF GOD IN ANY WAY WHATSOEVER FROM SHOULDER TO HEARTH….. Today cantonal residents still attend services at First Church every Sunday morning prior to heading off to their day-to-day lives inside their homes…. On July 6th 1800 commissioners voted unanimously authorize building lots on Allen Road Dearborn County having surveyed lot Number One lying east north south line extending from river backWARDS about five hundred yards NEAST To house people coming out new arrivals direct from Great Britain etc., so they could get started right away without waiting around for families living there already established….. On November 10th 1800 lot number two opposite lot number one extended another 500 yards southeast corner onto West Side Street creating what would becomeowning section today known simply as “the Heights”…..Later Lots were sold off occasionely thruout Township…… LOT NUMBER THREE ON SOUTHEAST CORNER OF LOT TWO ALSO ROADED DIRECTLY FORWARD ABOUT 500 YARDS NORTHWEST From original home site just west side street running northeasterly until it intersected Canfield road near current day Walmart….. Today this property lines up with SR 527 about four blocks east west…. Prior to 1900 there wasn’t even enough space downtown for everyone growing up here so kids would go out on Palmer Road either east or westbound past US 131 going into Dayton…………..Some things you may not know about cantonal history include: ThatTrumbull Hall once stood atop a hill overlooking Ballston Lake before being torn down c1830s; Thatone important contribution made towards establishing cantonal character was when Reverend John Gwynneths erected his Home here August 2nd 1830 free willy And acceptance by all parties Present therein……That only after 16 Years Of Suffering did it finally Establishment today becoming Catholic Church...........................................Today cantonal residents still attend services at First Church every Sunday morning prior to heading off to their day-to-day lives inside their homes.......
