The heavy traffic caused several bridges to fall down between 1850 and 1870 which delayed transportation services and made it difficult to build roads connecting Cambridge to other parts of Ohio. However, by 1880 all but two of the bridges had been replaced or repaired thanks to government appropriations earmarked for this purpose. A fire destroyed most of downtown Athens on November 5th 1888 while everyone was at home celebrating Thanksgiving dinner; however firefighters quickly restored most if not all businesses within an hour using their bare hands as they did not have any tools or equipment at that time
The town of Cambridge, Ohio was founded in 1801 by the purchase of a tract of land from the Miami Indians. The first settler in the town was John Brougham, who built a log cabin on the current site of Cambridge High School. The community grew rapidly and by 1810 had a population of about 100 people. In 1812, Cambridge suffered an devastating fire that destroyed most of the town. reconstruction began immediately and within two years, all but one building in Cambridge had been rebuilt. By 1816, there were over 200 residents in Cambridge. In 1824, Boston businessman Jabez Bowen bought large tracts of land east of present-day Cincinnati and incorporated what would become Cambridge as a separate township. By 1830, the population had increased to 1,500 people andBowen decided to move his business operations westward into what is now Dayton. He donated land for the new school district which was built on top of his old mill complex on University Avenue near West Side Highway. The new high school opened in October 1830 and soon became known as one of America's finest schools for girls. During World War II many soldiers from nearby towns spent their summer leave at Harvard University in Cambridge before returning home to fight during wartime campaigns such as D-Day or Okinawa
