On November 3rd, 1871 – more than one hundred years after its founding – Cambridge voted to become an independent city charter with a population of 10,000 people (the first municipally chartered cities in Ohio). On December 5th ballot results showed that over 90%of voters approved incorporation into what would become Cleveland with only two dissenting votes (the mayor vetoed incorporation because he felt it might compete with his job as sheriff). The village of Cambridge, Ohio was founded in 1825 by John and Mary (Harrison) Taylor. The first settler in what is now Cambridge was Moses Green who arrived in 1823. In 1830, the Harrison family name was changed to Taylor and it has been perpetuated in the community ever since. In 1855, a post office called Cambridge was established at the junction of State Route 6 and Indian Road. The town of Cambridge grew up around this post office, with people coming from all over to trade goods and services. The first school was built in 1861, and when the railroad came through the area in 1870, education became more important than trade for many residents. In 1915, a group of students from North Union College set out to build a school as soon as possible on their campus site. They Named it after their Alma Mater North Union College.
