The city is located on the Scioto River and is bordered by Holmes County to the north and east, Stark County to the south and west, and Butler County to the northwest. The first settlers in what would become Cambridge were two families from Lancaster who moved there in 1810. In 1816, John Quincy Adams became President of United States after being elected as an Anti-Masonic candidate. He visited Cambridge during his campaign trip across Ohio and impressed upon its residents that he wanted them to unite with Philadelphia for political purposes should their state be won by him. On election day (November 3rd), Adams was re-elected with 71% of the vote against John Cranch's 29%. The new mayor of Boston at that time was Simeon Atkins who had come overland from Cincinnati on horseback because he could not get a job as Mayor due to his Masonic membership which disqualified him from office at that time AfterAdams' second term ended in 1824, Nathan Hale served as Mayor for one year before becoming Ulysses S Grant's Secretary of War under Lincoln which made him ineligible for reelection so he chose instead to retire back home to Pennsylvania where he died three years later at age 80 years old When Union General William Tecumseh Sherman attacked Athens on November 11th 1864 while supplies were being brought upriver they successfully destroyed all but one bridge over Scioto River making it difficult for Confederate forces attempting retreat upstream route through central Ohio Valley only possible using boats or wagons across narrow stretches of waterway - this success led directly into Sherman's famous strategic decision when leading troops through Central Illinois towards Indiana following his November 12th orders "go around them" rather than frontal assault resulting in huge Union casualty list numbering 153 dead outnumbered Confederates killed or wounded plus large number captured including brigade commander James Longstreet commanding Third Corps - this event helped secure total victory over Confederate forces within ten days overallbecoming known as "the Battle That Failed" In 1916, when World War I began with Germany & Austria-Hungary declaration of war on Austria – Hungary – Italy – Russia each side contributed an army totaling 100 divisions along with naval fleets totaling 1 million men creating largest volunteer military effort ever prior thereto such mobilization had resulted in far fewer deaths then any peacetime conflict preceding or following WWI thanks largely to better organized medical care however unprecedentedly high casualties occurred during early stagesoffensive (Austria/Hungary) & post offensive (Russia) theater caused primarily by defective equipment used by respective armies which soon produced results similar enough compared to European theater experience leading generals called 'battlefield exhaustion' theory since no longer able to maintain high intensity combat any longer even if outnumbered 2:1 ratio which had begun deteriorating prior presenceOfmilitiasOn battlefield eliminated most opportunitiesFor civiliansTo help except under very specific circumstances notably urban areas near battle sites where Manpower complementing militaries could provide essential services including ambulance service food delivery water supply etc

The town was named for Cambridge, England where the first Methodist church was built in 1799. The village of Cambridge grew up around the Methodist church and other social services offered by the missionaries. In 1840, when Indiana became a state, Cambridge became part of Holmes County. In 1868, after the American Civil War ended,Holmes County merged with Ross County to form Warren County. In 1937, Warren County was dissolved and its lands divided among Clinton Township (now Rankin Township), Athens Township (now Orchard Township), and Walnut Creek Borough (now Alexandria Township). The area now known as Cambridge remained part of Athens Township until it was reorganized as Rankin Township in 1954. From 1954 to 1978, Cambridge was located in Clinton Township. On November 3, 1998, Cambridge voters approved a proposal to become an independent city which would have been governed by a mayor and City Council members instead of a municipality board composed of five trustees who were elected from individual wards within the township limits
