BucYRUS is a small city in Hardin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name BucYRUS is derived from the English word "bocage" meaning "a meadow". The first settlers in what is now Bucyrus were Methodist Episcopalians who arrived in 1800. A post office was established here in 1819 and remained open until 1865. In the early 19th century, BucYRUS was known as a trading point for Native Americans on the Unalaska River. In 1847-48, Captain John Fenton of the United States Coast Guard set up a trading post here while exploring this area for new land grants. He named it Fenton's Landing because he had found this spot on his exploration voyage around America Welcome to Our Harbor (1846). After Captain Fenton's death in 1850, his son James C. Fenton took over operations at the landing until 1862 when he sold it to Samuel Halleck Sr., an American fur trader and explorer with experience in North Asia and Siberia. For many years Halleck used it as headquarters for his business ventures throughout Asia before selling it to George Wickersham about 1880. Wickersham renamed it BucYRUS after himself and various other family members including two brothers who had played important roles in developing Western trade with Asia – Ephraim Wickerham (1793-1868) and Amos Richardson (1795-1857). From 1890 through 1907, Bucyrus served as capital of Hardin County; however, due to financial problems caused by World War I there was no mail service during that time period so residents sent their letters by horseback or by boat across the river to Dayton until 1919 when a railroad service started which continued until 1951 In 1902 David Bock developed a sugar refinery on what is now Mahoning Avenue near downtown Bucyrus which employed 100 people at its peak production during World War I Since 1913 Bucyrus has been home to Lake Erie University where over 30 campuses offer undergraduate degrees ranging from arts/humanities/health sciences/business administration to engineering/ Computer Science/Lawrence Technological University BucYRUS also hosts several popular events each year such as Homecoming Parade & Reception; Fall Festival; Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony; Independence Day Celebration; Fourth of July fireworks display & more
