In 1806, Bucyrus became part of the Northwest Territory. The city was incorporated as a town in 1837. The first courthouse in Bucyrus was built in 1847. In 1870, Bucyrus became a city and it had its own fire department until 1934 when it merged with the Cleveland Fire Department. In 1912, Bucyrus became part of the Cleveland metropolitan area.
Bucyrus is a town in White County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by Methodist missionaries from New York City. The first settler in Bucyrus was John Winchester and his family. They built a log cabin on the site of today's Old Town Hall on the Scioto River in 1836. In 1840, they moved to what is now North Main Street and First Avenue. John Winchester's widow, Elizabeth (Betsy) Winchester, started a school for Native Americans called "The Indian School" on Second Avenue in 1847 which still operates as a public school today. In 1861, Reverend George Washington Smith bought land east of where bucyrus now stands and established Centreville Baptist Church there. In 1865-1866, he also built a gristmill on the Scioto River west of town and named it Bucyrus Mill after himself and his wife Betsy Wintersmith Smith. The mill continued to operate until 1903 when it was destroyed by fire. One of the first stores in town was J & W Hutton's Store located at 5th and Elm Streets near present day State Route 3 Roadhouse Boulevard . This store closed about 1850 but reopened about 1870 as an general store with two stories with cupolas over each floor selling groceries such as flour, sugar beets etc., dried goods including nuts/seeds etc., eggs etc., hardware including nails etc., soap products (butter shampoo bars), hats etc., books including religious texts such as Bible versions of Daniel 7-11 and Isaiah 44-49 along with trade catalogues from around Europe which were sold back home across Pennsylvania via mail order A post office operated at Bucyrus from 1868 until 1902 when it merged into that operated by Columbus . In 1906-1907 Dr Geo Mears opened an optometry office at 116 High Street which continues to provide optical services to residents today

It is located in Belmont County and is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is located there. The town of Bucyrus was platted in 1807 by Nicholas Bucyrus and others under the name of Scioto Township. In 1812 it became part of Belmont County and was renamed to its current name in 1837 after General James Wilkinson Bucyrus (1785-1864), an officer in the American Revolution and a member of Congress from Ohio. The first store on Main Street opened on July 1, 1830, and the first school opened for children on November 9, 1830. In 1840 local farmers formed a Methodist Episcopal church which grew rapidly and organized into a mission society in 1845 with land donated by Mr. Jno Wrayworth along with $10 per acre ($353 at 2006 values). By 1860 Bucyrus had a full-time school system with twelve students; two churches; three stores; two taverns; one hotel; four blacksmiths; five wagonmakers; six farmers around sixty acres (248 hectares) farmsteads or plantations worth $2 million ($8 million at 2006 values) – more than any other town inOhio during that time period
The Bucyrus area has been inhabited since the early 1800s. The first European to visit the area was Andrew Lewis, who explored it in 1814. In 1830, John Sibley founded a sawmill on the still-active Mahoning River and called it Bucyrus. By 1840, Bucyrus had a population of about 100 people. In 1851, Ohio became a state and Bucyrus became its capital. The city served as the capital for several years until Columbus took over in 1861.
