The town was first organized on December 5, 1812 under the name of Uniontown by a group of nine residents from nearby Worthington and Delaware towns. Uniontown's only store was opened in 1815 by Elisha Goodrich and closed in 1865. A post office called Uniontown began operations on December 5, 1812, and served until it was discontinued on October 15, 1860. In 1870, Jeptha Cook built a dam across the Scioto River between Bucyrus and Dayton to provide power for his coal mine; this caused flooding that destroyed many homes and businesses around the town. In 1906–07 two floods hit the area causing extensive damage including loss of life when a portion of Sweetwater Creek broke its banks upstream from Cook's mine creating an impoundment that reached below Bucyrus creek bed which backed up Lake Erie for days This failure led to stricter regulation of water withdrawals from rivers by state authorities beginning with prohibitionism during World War I . With increased access to reliable energy sources following developments such as oil drilling near shale formations discovered along Interstate 75 near Cleveland , industry slowly declined throughout most of the 20th century leaving behind several struggling small towns . The first settler in what would become Bucyrus was John Hopkins in 1811. The community was named after Brigadier General James Bucyrus who fought in the War of 1812. In 1814, Captain George Washington Smith landed with his party on Mud Creek to establish a trading post along the Scioto River. This site became known as Smith's Landing and later as Smith's Ferry landing on Mahoning Bayou. In 1830, Ebenezer Emmons founded a store and post office at what is now downtown Bucyrus which served as the town's main artery until it was moved to its present location in 1865 when US 1 replaced it across Mahoning Bayou from downtown Bucyrus (the original post office name). In 1840, Isaac Myers opened a grocery store and mercantile enterprise near where US-1 crossed Mahoning Bayou just east of current day downtown Bucyrus (then called "Township Field"). By 1850, Myers had developed into an entrepôt for local manufacturers and merchants along with his own farmsteads; these included grist mills, sawmills, blacksmith shops and other industrial establishments that continue to operate today under various names including Meyer Bros., Empire Mills & Factory Park LLC., Midtown Fabricators Inc., Empire Mfg Co., etc.; all descendants of Isaac Myers' family still live here today. In 1865, US-1 replaced Highway 4 through downtown by routing it parallel to State street then concurrent with Commerce Street before splitting off again north towards Cleveland while Township Field remained south side of State street until absorbed into city limits in 1972 - thus ending township status within Bucyrous County! Today much of Downtown bucylus retains its pioneer spirit includingbuildings dating back to 1830 such as The Masonic Temple/Hospital built by Ebenezer Emmons & Brother Solomon Underwood which still stands today & home to Today’s United Methodist Church which seated over 1000 people up until 1954 when services were moved away from downtown due to enrollment troubles; also visible are several early 20th century businesses such as The Grange Hotel/Bennett Drug Store which operated for many years next door to Oneonta Market before moving out during the Great Depression; Gabriel’s Bakery/ Cafeteria located directly next door fronting Center Road originally serving >3500 customers daily prior to closing during World War II dueTo limited space) also Early 20th century shopping center anchored by Tiffany’s (now Macy’s) across Main Street featuring several department stores including Sears Roebuck & Company (now Macy’s), JCPenney (now Barnes& Noble), Kress Department Stores (Kress ICS), Cook Shoe Co./Dalhart Boot Factory (& More) all existing until recently unchanged without any major redevelopment occurring since their closure more than 50 years ago!
