Bucyrus is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, on the Kanawha River. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bucyrus County. The first European to visit present-day Bucyrus was Father Gabriel De La Salle in 1692, and he named it after an Indian chief who had been killed near the town. The first permanent settler in what is now Bucyrus was John Evans, a white man who arrived in 1796 and built a toll road across the Kanawha River from what is now Dayton to serve as a trade route between Virginia and points west. By 1814, Evans had secured title to all present-day Bucyrus Township from Ottawa County, making it one of Ohio's original counties. In 1821, when Ohio became a state, Cincinnati was chosen as its capital; however, much of Bucyrus took until 1827 for that city's incorporation because of objections from two local leaders: John Dyer (the builder of Stroudsburg), who wanted more power over bucolic residential neighborhoods within his city limits; and David Wray (a farmer and innkeeper), who objected to high taxes that were levied by Cincinnati's newly formed government on commerce within its borders but not on traffic along its outskirts). The township incorporated as part of Hamilton County on March 15th, 1827; but due to resistance by some residents including General Leonard Wood during the American Civil War bucolic neighborhoods eastward from downtown were spared significant economic damage although many dwellings did go up in smoke or are still standing today among other reminders of early commercial development hereabouts. After annexation into Hamilton County by Cincinnati in 1911 most residents moved out with their homes while businesses continued operations through 1914 before ceasing altogether due to World War I shortages thereof materials resources which contributed importantly to both sides' conflicts thereover - finally leading to reestablishment barely five years later when war production recommenced providing wartime jobs for many citizens once again moving back into their homes though business continued until about 1930 when market conditions caused them too much competition for available resources so they ceased operations also leaving behind very deteriorated examples still standing today among other reminders of early commercial development hereabouts prior thereto - such as four large brick warehouses located just off Delaware Avenue being almost certainly erected contemporaneously with those structures seeing extensive use throughout both world wars resultant therein althoug’ no documentary evidence exists whatsoever connecting those warehouses directly thereto thereby challenging any remotely construed connection between them and current day SantaFe Shopping Center either physically or historically however if memory serves Built 1912 & 1915)
