Bucyrus is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Bucyrus County. It was founded by General George Washington in 1781 as a small settlement on the Scioto River. The city became an important commercial center after being made the capital of Ohio in 1801. It was renamed Cleveland in 1837, and it lost its status as the capital when that city was merged into Cleveland with other municipalities in 1937. The population of Bucyrus peaked at 21,812 in 1960 and declined to 14,527 by 2000. At present, the population is 13,651.

Bucyrus, Ohio is a small town in the northeast corner of the state of Ohio. It lies just east of the unincorporated community of Delaware in Lucas County. As of the 2010 census, its population was 5,872. The Bucyrus post office has been in operation since 1811. The first settler in what is now Bucyrus was Nicholas Nicholson, who arrived there in 1800 and named it after himself. He had been born at Canterbury, England on December 26th, 1755. Nicholson purchased land here from John Uriarte and built a log cabin on his own lot around 1810-1811. This was followed by another home built byNicholson's father-in-law Lewis Kirkpatrick about 1814 or 1815 on a plot which he donated to the town site as part of a public donation campaign to build a school and church for Bucyrus Township residents. The first structure erected by Bucyrus township trustees was an addition to the Methodist Church located near present day State Route 224 W., which opened its doors October 6th, 1824 as part of that township's centennial celebration. That year also saw the opening of what is still known as "the old mill" - a two story frame building with hand pumps used for flour delivery until 1830 when water systems became more sophisticated and automated; later becoming an industrial laundry facility that operated for many years before being demolished in 1958. In 1827 David Blackburn established what is now called Blackburn Furniture Manufacturing Company here at this location using skills he acquired while working as an apprentice with Ebenezer Brown at his familyowned business downtown - Brown & Blackburn Builders & Contractors (later known as Blackburne Hardware). From that point forward, much larger enterprises were established within the boundaries of today's Bucyrus - including America Paper Products Co., American CanCompany (now Allied Bagels), First National Bank (founded 1865), United States Steel Corporation (founded 1919) and current day furniture company Dillard’s Incorporated (founded 1921).
The Bucyrus area was first settled by the Ohio Native Americans in the early 18th century. The area was named for Captain John Bucyrus, who fought in the French and Indian War. In 1795, a post office was established at Bucyrus, and remained in operation until 1938.
