In 1830-31,Captain Nathan Appleton traded with the Shawnee Indians here for horses and corn during his military campaigns against them near present day Akron. Uncle Tom's Cabin was published in 1861 by Wm Hallett in Brunswick Township while People's Party candidate William Jennings Bryan visited here that year for campaign purposes; He spoke at an evening rally before traveling back to Akron where he gave several more events before returning home on November 6th aboard a train stopping at Brunswick station along with President Abraham Lincoln when he came into town for dinner (the only time such an event took place within Ohio). On November 15th 1865 during American Civil War Battle of Chickamauga Station Union artillery destroyed part of Confederate Prisoner-of-War camp just east of town killing over 100 men including many children who were played inside by Confederate officers as entertainers or hostages; this event helped start development around town leading to increased business activity around both army barracks and other places used by prisoners of war later known as Camp Union Cemetery afterwards) In 1870 local citizens raised money through donations to buy 640 acres (2 km²) outside present day downtown Brunswick where they would erect a new courthouse square named after themselves which would be their permanent home until 1924 when it burned down; this led to further growth throughouttown with businesses opening up all along Main Street including ice cream parlors (founded 1902), grocery stores ( 1903), car dealerships ( 1908), insurance firms ( 1912), plumbers & pipers shops ( 1913), banks ( 1918–1920), doctor offices/hospitality services ( 1923) etc.; between 1920-1970 there were over 50 businesses operating in downtown Brunswick alone!
