Brunswick, Ohio is a town in the Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,986 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Springfield–Mt Vernon Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was organized in 1812 and named for Brunswick, Maine. It was laid out on a farming district that included present-day Akron and Canton. The first post office in Brunswick opened in 1814. In 1830, it became the county seat of Muskingum County. In 1836, the state of Ohio granted land to trustees to develop as a village within Muskingum County called New Albany. The trustees selected a site for New Albany on the Scioto River north of current-day Canton and began building what would become Brunswick on May 1, 1837. The first store in Brunswick opened in 1839 and prospered until 1840 when an fire destroyed most of the town's buildings. After rebuilding from scratch, the store reopened in 1840 and continued to operate until it closed its doors again in 1893. In 1850, two brothers built a cotton gin near modern-day Canton which soon became one of the largest cotton gins west of Mississippi River. This gin continues to be operational today as mill 1092 LLC (owned by Sylvester Belknap).
