Brunswick, Ohio is a small town in the heart of the United States. The population was 8,859 at the 2010 census. It is located in south-central Ohio and straddles the border of Ohio and Indiana. The name "Brunswick" comes from Brunswick County, which was part of West Virginia until 1792. The area that became Brunswick was first settled by Europeans in the late 17th century as part of what is now Delaware County. In 1811, a group of British colonists founded a trading post on the Scioto River in present-day Brunswick. They named their new settlement after King George III's brother, Prince George of Wales (later King George IV). The post served as a base for trade with Indian tribes and beyond. In 1816, when Ohio became a state, Brunswick was included within its borders. In 1817, two years after Ohio's admission to the Union as a country, General Anthony Wayne led an army against Native Americans at Fallen Timbers Monument near present-day Portsmouth. The battle resulted in one hundred dead and more than two thousand wounded; it remains one of America's most iconic military victories. Afterward, many English settlers moved into what is now Brunswick because of their access to land grants from the government. As time passed, other groups also moved into southern parts of what would become Akron and later Cleveland while others built mills around downtown Brunswick for grinding corn or flour until those activities were replaced by heavy industry during World War I and II due to advances in transportation technology such as railways and air travel throughout much of central America
